In particular, the subject focuses on the identification and treatment of individuals with mental disorders; relevant processes and decision-making in different elements of the criminal justice system; examining contemporary approaches to definitions, diagnostic tools, notions of criminal responsibility and fitness to stand trial; and the use of psychological knowledge, theory, and research to guide reflective practice and build personal, professional resilience.

As a foundation, you will learn about stress and coping, well-being and happiness, and motivation and behaviour change. This content includes different theories and models used in psychology to explain these concepts.Then you will explore the theory, scholarly evidence base, and practice of a range of self-care approaches, grouped into three themes:1. Lifestyle (healthy eating, physical activity, sleep, relaxation, social connections, and nature engagement)2. Mindfulness (everyday/informal mindfulness, formal mindfulness and meditation, compassion and self-compassion) and3. Positive Psychology (gratitude, acts of kindness, character strengths, meaning in life, flow and creativity). This subject explores ways in which the creative arts and play can be used therapeutically to support and enhance mental wellbeing for children, adolescents and younger people. It explores particular challenges associated with life events, neurodiversity, or for those who are from minority or marginalised groups. A framework derived from principles of trauma-informed practice is used to inform critical evaluation of complex issues, and to consider appropriate and effective design of creative arts and play-based activities in a variety of scenarios. You will have opportunities to explore your own creativity and gain practical insight into different roles in the therapeutic arts, and to explore your own interests by conducting individual research that will deepen your understanding of the potential of creative arts and play for supporting aspects of the mental wellbeing of a specific cohort.

TAS-CNA739 introduces you to psychological therapies used in mental health settings, either as stand-alone interventions or in combination with pharmacological interventions.
