How much of a tale is in the telling? This subject introduces concepts, terms and skills used in the analysis of literary narrative, and applies them to texts drawn from a wide range of genres, periods and nations. The subject will consider key topics in narrative analysis, such as: narrative voice and point of view; the relationship between author, narrator and reader; narrative time; narrative and genre; the unreliable narrator; adaptation of literary narratives to film; the ways literary texts open and close; narrative poetry; and narrative theory.

Telling Tales: Literature and Narrative

This subject introduces you to effective professional communication techniques and practices applicable to the workplace and study. You will learn about the foundations of communication, the various communication styles, professional etiquette, and different types of communication behaviours. A central focus of this subject is for you to understand your own style, and gain an awareness of how you communicate and how others might feel based on how you behave and interact.In addition, you will explore a range of barriers and enablers to effective communication, and develop strategies such as active listening, conflict resolution, and giving and receiving feedback. You will practice, and be assessed on, effective communication in groups and in a simulated environment. This will include participation in role plays, interviewing others, presenting ideas, and completing various group and individual activities. In conjunction with the discipline theory, this unit introduces learning through practice by exposing you to authentic learning experiences. These experiences are placed at the centre of learning and assessment, so you have the opportunity to develop the skills, knowledge and behaviours necessary to respond to industry, community and/or global needs. You will be introduced to:- a range of methods, tools, techniques and approaches to practice- principles and perspectives such as values, ethics, empathy and leadership in real world scenarios- reflection and deliberative thinking as a means of developing knowledge, skills, attitudes and aspirations- ways of understanding problems and developing solutions through active inquiry. The Professional Communication subject is designed to help you develop essential communication skills that are vital for success in any professional setting. While this focuses on enhancing your ability to communicate effectively and professionally, it is not specifically tailored for those looking to improve their English language skills.

Professional Communication

In this subject you will develop your ability to communicate in written form in a university environment. You will gain the skills and develop strategies to plan and write academically. In particular, you will analyse assignment tasks, learn how to structure an essay, draw on your critical thinking skills, and synthesise multiple academic sources and reference these in-text.

Learn how to write like a university student. Academic writing skills are essential for successful essays, exams, reports, and more. You’ll cover the entire writing process—including planning, drafting, referencing, and editing.

In this subject, you are provided the opportunity to employ skills developed across a range of University Preparation subjects to complete a guided research project. Using techniques in research, analysis, problem-solving, reflection, and academic communication, you will investigate a topic of your choosing, undertake academic investigation of the key issues or challenges involved and, finally, produce an evidence-based analysis and argument expressing your perspective. The research and writing skills developed and practised in this subject apply to a diverse range of disciplinary environments, from the humanities to the sciences.

UPP Project A

This subject introduces the skills of academic writing by examining broad conventions. In this subject you will learn how to analyse assessment questions, plan and structure essays, build an academic language set, and write for the academic environment. To enable you to practise and apply your writing skills, you will complete individual journal pieces and an essay. This core subject in the University Preparation Program uses a series of micro themes to develop critical writing skills and to provoke interest in a range of disciplines. This introductory subject will prepare you for Associate Degree or Bachelor in Degree writing.

Writing in Practice

Language is what makes us human. It influences our thoughts and affects our lives in even more ways that we might expect. In this advanced subject, students are introduced to the most important and strongly debated issues in the psychology of language. Lecture topics include the distinctive features of human language as a system of communication, language structure, acquisition and development, the understanding and production of speech (and what happens when these processes go wrong), the development of reading and spelling, and how the social and cultural environment can influence how language is used.

Psychology of Language

Students can develop the fundamental written and verbal communication skills necessary for effective communication in both business careers and academic studies in this subject. As such, the focus of it is two-fold; firstly, developing your personal communication skills and secondly, also giving you a better understanding of the significant role of international business communication in the workplace.

International Business Communication

Tasmania and Australia are rich in history and heritage. What gets presented and celebrated however is contested and challenged. This subject does not only introduce a critical reading of heritage, it offers tools and frameworks for participants to reflect and be cognisant of the challenges of presenting the past, and address difficult challenges in offering heritage to the community and to tourists. Being sensitive and balanced is necessary but what that means is contested. By addressing difficult issues, this subject provides guidance on how to create, formulate and mediate exciting and meaningful heritage experiences.

Critical and Contested Issues in Cultural Heritage

This subject provides opportunity to study a selection of Shakespearean plays and their stage and screen performance afterlives. Starting from a close consideration of Shakespeare&#39;s dramatic language, the subject will consider the multiple possibilities the plays offer for realisation in performance. Students will explore a range of issues associated with the development of Shakespeare&#39;s scripts for performance, such as the differences between stage and screen adaptation, the relationship between Shakespeare&#39;s language and the visual language of film, and the ways in which Shakespeare adaptations reflect changing cultural perspectives and preoccupations.

This subject offers students the opportunity to think critically about some of the most popular texts in Western culture. What makes a bestseller? What are the defining features of major popular genres and how have they changed over time? What roles do genre texts play in contemporary culture? To address these questions, students in this subject will examine a variety of popular genres and subgenres that may range from now canonical fantasy novels to the latest trends in paranormal romance, from classic tales of treasure islands and lost worlds to mind-bending adventures in alternative realities. The assessment tasks in this subject focus on: developing effective study skills for generating persuasive arguments in English studies; conducting research in order to develop and strengthen arguments; and refining communication skills through discussion with peers and formal academic writing.
