Public speaking is a vital skill in almost every field. Whether it’s a speech to an audience of thousands, a pitch presentation to a client, or a tea room farewell to an office colleague, at some stage in your career you will be required to stand in front of an audience and deliver a coherent speech. The way you present yourself to your audience affects the way they see you. If you are able to express your ideas confidently, you will be seen as a stronger leader, a proactive citizen, and a more valuable employee.In this subject you will be trained in effective, oral communication skills (in English), for public presentation in a variety of “real world” environments and online. You will develop skills in speech writing and analysis, vocal techniques and body language, and the use of appropriate presentation technologies.

How much of a tale is in the telling? This subject introduces concepts, terms and skills used in the analysis of literary narrative, and applies them to texts drawn from a wide range of genres, periods and nations. The subject will consider key topics in narrative analysis, such as: narrative voice and point of view; the relationship between author, narrator and reader; narrative time; narrative and genre; the unreliable narrator; adaptation of literary narratives to film; the ways literary texts open and close; narrative poetry; and narrative theory.

Telling Tales: Literature and Narrative

This subject examines the role that poetry and storytelling play in the intervention into, and the construction of, Australian cultures. The subject aims to develop students’ awareness of, and participation in, Australian poetry. Students will gain a broad overview of the history of Australian poetry and develop skills in critical and creative thinking and practice, become familiar with terms and concepts used to describe and analyse poetry, learn how to craft their own poems and develop their own poetic voice. Through a process of critical and creative thinking, reflective practice and creative writing, students will develop insights into how we imagine Australian cultures through poetry and storytelling. Australian Poetry: Storytelling and the Creative Space

This unit introduces students to the critical reading of diverse texts—fiction and non-fiction, poetry and prose, literary and non-literary forms. Students will explore and experiment with a range of writing practices and reflect on the contemporary ethical, practical, and imaginative challenges and possibilities of writing in an ever-evolving digital environment. Writing Creatively

This practice-based subject, taught by practitioners, introduces you to writing for live performance.It is broadly conceived, from traditional plays and monologues to metatheatrical works and musical theatre; from ‘high’ forms such as the contemporary epic to low forms such as cabaret.Through creative and critical readings, incremental in-class exercises and collaborative writing workshops, you will explore a range of techniques, theories, and practices to craft performance texts.This is a Level 3 subject: please consider the subject prerequisites before enrolling.
