This for-credit subject is a preparatory mathematics subject intended for students who have not completed secondary school mathematics and who have insufficient background for the more advanced mathematics required for success in MAS162, MAS182 and MAS161. The topics covered include algebra; polynomials, exponential and logarithmic functions and their graphs; matrices; basic concepts of differential and integral calculus and applications.Please Note: All students studying at Murdoch University will need to complete the compulsory unit, Murdoch Academic Passport (MAP100), which only takes 2-3 hours to complete online. Fundamentals of Mathematics

This subject was previously known as Applied Mathematics.This subject provides an introduction to differential and integral calculus, and basic ordinary differential equations. The concepts and techniques will be motivated and illustrated using mathematical models in engineering, the physical and biological sciences, commerce, economics, and the social sciences. Other topics include complex numbers and their applications.You are strongly advised NOT to enrol in MAS182 and MAS164 at the same time. In order to successfully complete MAS182, you will require the knowledge gained from the successful completion of MAS164.Murdoch University advises that students who do not successfully complete MAS164 before attempting MAS182 usually fail MAS182.Students who did not study mathematics at school, did not receive good marks, or have not studied mathematics in a long time should enrol in MAS164 before attempting MAS182. All enrolled students may access Murdoch&#39;s <a href="https://goto.murdoch.edu.au/MathsRefresher" target="_blank">Maths Refresher Program</a>. Fundamentals of Mathematics for Data Analytics

The applicability of calculus and linear algebra is so broad that fluency in it is essential for a successful career in a variety of areas including science and engineering. This subject is devoted to the conceptual and logical development of these two main areas of mathematics, gradually building the tools for solving innumerable problems of great practical importance. In the calculus part of the subject, a brief look at the Real Number System and their properties will lead us to the study of Functions in general and the study of special functions such as trigonometric, exponential and logarithmic functions. The notion of limits will be utilized to define continuity and differentiability of functions, emphasizing the importance of understanding the material conceptually and graphically. This area will also help establish the technical skills necessary to solve problems arising in practical situations. One highlight of the subject will be the discussion of the Fundamental Theorem of Calculus, which unifies differential and integral calculus. An introduction to two and three dimensional vector spaces will be an essential part of the subject as the knowledge in that area is vital, particularly for studies in engineering and physics. This subject is a required unit in the Bachelor of Science mathematics major and Bachelor of Engineering students.

Mathematics 1A

The foundations of linear algebra and calculus introduced in MATH1010 are further explored and extended. Topics covered in algebra include: inverse matrices, determinants, vector spaces &amp; subspaces, eigenvalues and eigenvectors and linear transformations. In calculus the topics include: the further development of the concepts of limits, continuity and the derivative, numerical integration, polynomials, sequences &amp; series and differential equations. In addition, complex numbers and the calculus of two or more variables are introduced. Students utilise mathematical software throughout the course to support and enhance problem solving for a variety of theoretical and practical problems.

Calculus & Linear Algebra II

This is the first mainstream university mathematics unit; it is essential for students in engineering and many areas of science. This subject provides an introduction to basic concepts and techniques in linear algebra and calculus. In algebra, topics covered include matrices, systems of linear equations and their applications, including the use of vectors in two and three-dimensional Euclidean geometry and linear optimisation. In calculus, the concept of a function of one variable is explored, and the notions of limit and continuity are developed. The concept of the derivative as a suitable construct to describe rates of change is defined and techniques of differential and integral calculus of functions of a real variable are developed. Some simple differential equations and their role as quantitative models for dynamic processes, are discussed. Students are also introduced to the use of computers in mathematics, and develop modelling and problem solving skills through theoretical and practical problems.

Calculus and Linear Algebra I

Students will be introduced to how mathematical models are used in biological, biophysical sciences and we will emphasise insight into how models may be derived from biophysical assumptions. A small but representative range of biophysical applications is investigated. The strengths and limitations of models to make predictions about ecological sustainability are explored. The subject is organised in modules, each focusing on a specific application.  Learning resources including all lecture materials will be available on-line. Students participate in two 1-hour problem solving classes per week to work through problem sets designed to strengthen basic mathematical skills. Considerable use will be made of spreadsheets as a tool for understanding mathematical models and performing calculations.

Mathematical Applications In Biology

Advanced calculus techniques are an essential tool for scientists modelling complex systems, from electromagnetic oscillations to the spread of infectious diseases. Integrating with other offerings in calculus and linear algebra this subject not only provides you with methods applied across the natural and social sciences but also with a theoretical foundation allowing you to pursue further study in mathematics. You will explore topics with broad applications, including linear mappings (determinant and eigenvectors), further techniques of integration and improper integrals, infinite series and Taylor series, parametric equations and implicit equations, and basic differential equations.
