If you are able to express your ideas confidently, you will be seen as a stronger leader, a proactive citizen, and a more valuable employee.In this subject you will be trained in effective, oral communication skills (in English), for public presentation in a variety of “real world” environments and online. You will develop skills in speech writing and analysis, vocal techniques and body language, and the use of appropriate presentation technologies.

Why do some problems come to the attention of governments while others do not? Who is involved in the policy-making process? Pressure groups, media, think tanks; what are their goals? How are policies evaluated? Theoretical explanations are combined with practical examples from Australia and overseas to provide students with a critical understanding of how policy is made. Public Policy Analysis

The purpose of this subject is to provide you with an understanding of the role of epidemiology in public health. You will learn about the different epidemiological study designs, their strengths and weaknesses, and how to apply those methods to address public health problems. You will learn how to write a clear and comprehensive research proposal and to critically appraise epidemiological studies from the public health literature. You will be introduced to the basic principles of infectious diseases surveillance and the investigation of disease outbreaks and you will learn about the epidemiological principles of screening.

Epidemiology for Public Health

This subject explores social, cultural and ecological determinants shaping health in communities and populations. You will examine critical social factors such as education, occupation, social class, gender, ethnicity and culture as a basis for understanding how social structures, practices and processes influence health, well-being and equity. You will gain an understanding of the interrelationships between people, other species, natural and built environments, human health and public health practice. Responses to public health risks and disruptions, such as climate change, natural disasters and emergencies, will be explored as well as the role of public health professionals in their prevention, management, mitigation and adaptation. You will be introduced to the frameworks that public health practitioners use to contribute to a socially and ecologically sustainable world, and to improve human health.

Socio-Ecological Perspectives on Public Health Threats

In the era of evidence-based practice and policy in health care, evidence is required to determine how well an intervention works and whether it provides value for money. Evaluation is a tool to provide such information: measuring the success of the intervention in achieving its intended outcomes, determining its value, and providing information on how to improve interventions and service delivery to attain even greater success. Evaluation is an increasingly sought after skill in today’s health workforce. In this course, you will learn the basics of evaluation for health, including what it is, why we do it, and how to design and carry out an effective evaluation that answers real-world questions. The course builds from principles to practical application, providing you with the knowledge and skills to design and apply an integrated framework to evaluate a health intervention. You will learn about evaluation planning, different data sources, key processes for data collection and analysis, and economic evaluation. You will build your evaluation toolkit and develop an evaluation mindset, which will provide you with a strong foundation for knowing what works in your career.

Knowing What Works - Evaluation for Public Health

This subject introduces you to the concepts and principles of public health as they relate to various times in history and diverse contexts, populations and health challenges. You will acquire an understanding of the environmental, sociocultural, political, economic, technological, organisational, behavioural and genetic factors that interact to shape the health of communities and populations. You will identify and evaluate the range, strengths and weaknesses of evidence that informs public health policies, programs and practice, along with major ethical considerations. Public health successes and failures, and contemporary approaches to protecting and improving health, preventing and controlling disease and injury, and reducing health inequalities will be explored.
