This subject introduces the foundations of risk analysis, risk management, and contingency planning at an organisational level. The subject explores the foundations of risk across many industries and disciplines, examining the risk analysis process, contingency planning, business continuity and disaster recovery. By exploring the implications of current incidents in areas such as security, manufacturing, transportation, construction, and primary and secondary industries, you will gain insight into strategic and tactical decision making to avoid harm.

Risk and Security Management

Sound and effective management and leadership require not only financial and technical expertise but also ethical competency. Freelancing and Small Business

This subject introduces you to the creative industries and the roles of the so-called &#39;creative class&#39; and creative entrepreneur in shaping communities, urban development and digital economies in recent decades. By delving critically into the discourse of creative entrepreneurship, you will question what creativity is, how it has been used in the service of capitalism, and what dissenting voices oppose creativity. You will also explore first-hand how creativity can counter business-as-usual to forge new forms of democracy and engage in action for social equality and circular economies – or not! You will apply your critical lens to identify and develop a creative opportunity and learn the skills to develop a creative concept. You will also build communication, collaboration, and project management skills in this subject to further a creative vision.

Creative Entrepreneur

Business planning for successful organisations relies on both strategic and operational plans that inform and guide day to day activities and processes. Strategic planning concepts include medium to long term planning, vision, missions, values and objectives of an organisation. This subject explores how strategic planning informs operational planning, with a strong focus on how operational actions and activities are formulated and decided upon. It investigates approaches that underpin data-informed decision-making and planning including being able to identify and incorporate organisational challenges, opportunities and recommendations for improvements. You will engage in analysing, interpreting and evaluating data, information and operating context using business tools such as graphing, SWOTs, and business model canvases to inform operational planning. In conjunction with the discipline theory, this subject builds on concepts of learning through practice in Year 1 of study by introducing you to more complex learning experiences. You will be introduced to:- discipline-based skills and knowledge in dynamic practice situations. This will include authentic and purposeful, industry-related experiences - concepts of managing effective relationships and communicating with others - the development and use of adaptive leadership skills and how these skills relate to innovative and entrepreneurial practice- the nature of responsible, accountable and reflective workplace skills, and creative and critical thinking relevant to para-professional practice.

Business Planning and Decision Making

The effective and efficient operation of business is human resource intensive. Strategies used to attract, motivate, manage and retain the right people are essential skills for all business managers for business success. This subject introduces you to how Human Resource practices including functions such as recruitment, training, performance management and teamwork. You will explore the legal framework incorporating fairness and respect, health and safety, and equity and diversity that underpin human resource practice, using business examples and applied activities.This subject also incorporates learning through practice by exposing you to authentic learning experiences. These experiences are placed at the centre of learning and assessment, for you to develop the skills, knowledge and behaviours necessary to respond to industry, community and/or global needs. You will be introduced to:- a range of methods, tools, techniques and approaches to practice- principles and perspectives such as values, ethics, empathy and leadership in real world scenarios- reflection and deliberative thinking as a means of developing knowledge, skills, attitudes and aspirations- ways of understanding problems and developing solutions through active inquiry.

This subject introduces you to the theory and practice of strategic management, focusing on strategic thinking and decision making. Throughout your study you will be asked to place yourself in the position of a strategic manager and to use your creativity and ingenuity in mapping out strategies that will help your organisation maintain a competitive edge. To assist you meet this challenge, we will discuss in detail the various stages that make up the strategic management process. We will use a number of transport and logistics examples to show how the process works in practice. Use what you learn about the process as a guide, but always remember that mechanically following a process or technique, however well tried and tested, is no substitute for creative thinking!How you like to be treated as an employee is worth remembering as you proceed through the topics.  Consider also what you regard as “common sense”. As ‘level 3’ undergraduate students, you will be expected and encouraged to be creative and conceptual in applying strategic management theory. The key lies in how well you, as a strategic manager, can make opportunities out of threats and devise ingenious ways of making them work.

In working through this subject, it should become evident that effective people management is an important means of creating value, developing and creating a competitive advantage for T&amp;L organisations in the 21st century. This subject is a contemporary approach focusing on the strategy and practice of Human Resource Management utilising case studies to understand the process of building and nurturing people to sustain competitive advantage.

Managing People for Competitive Advantage

This subject is designed to provide students with an overview of the three key domains of organisational resilience - crisis management, business continuity management and protective security. Any organisation that looks to manage business risk needs to have a focus on these domains of expertise and they have arguably never been more important. Risks in these areas are cascading, merging and being managed more frequently. Security risks such as those influenced by geopolitical issues and cyber-security challenges are becoming more prominent. The subject describes the theoretical and conceptual basis for the key pillars , but also has a strong practical component. Students will learn the basic structures and applications of crisis management teams during a crisis, develop a business impact assessment and a threat and vulnerability assessment (for a protective security situation). The learning assessments are focused around the application of these skills in maritime and logistics organisations, but can be applied to any modern organisation that faces an array of enterprise risk.
