This degree is designed to provide students with basic skills and knowledge in a range of disciplinary studies in the humanities, arts and social sciences. The Diploma in Arts examines historic, environmental, social, behavioural and cultural features of humanity, allowing students to analyse, reflect upon and anticipate patterns of human conduct. Students will develop creative, critical and analytical skills to assist with future employment or to pursue further study.

Children’s literature is an important tool for exposing children to the moral, ethical and practical problems of the world in a way that is manageable and accessible for them.When you study this unit you will be introduced to the key elements of children’s literature, using case studies from children’s books, stories and poetry. You will gain an understanding of the range of concepts involved in analysing children’s texts, including the significance of the implied reader, the power of ideological contexts and the role of literature in childhood.You will explore a range of literary genres, techniques, and styles (including humour, fantasy and realism) in order to gain essential skills in reading, understanding and writing about literature.

Introduction to Literature: Children's Books

How much of a tale is in the telling? This subject introduces concepts, terms and skills used in the analysis of literary narrative, and applies them to texts drawn from a wide range of genres, periods and nations. The subject will consider key topics in narrative analysis, such as: narrative voice and point of view; the relationship between author, narrator and reader; narrative time; narrative and genre; the unreliable narrator; adaptation of literary narratives to film; the ways literary texts open and close; narrative poetry; and narrative theory.

Telling Tales: Literature and Narrative

The subject engages with the texts of William Shakespeare and his contemporaries, which may include writers such as Christopher Marlowe, John Fletcher, and Aphra Behn, and considers their relevance today. Shakespeare and His Contemporaries: Page and Stage

This subject examines the role that poetry and storytelling play in the intervention into, and the construction of, Australian cultures. The subject aims to develop students’ awareness of, and participation in, Australian poetry. Students will gain a broad overview of the history of Australian poetry and develop skills in critical and creative thinking and practice, become familiar with terms and concepts used to describe and analyse poetry, learn how to craft their own poems and develop their own poetic voice. Through a process of critical and creative thinking, reflective practice and creative writing, students will develop insights into how we imagine Australian cultures through poetry and storytelling. Australian Poetry: Storytelling and the Creative Space

Literature has always been at the forefront of responding to and influencing social change, providing profound insights into what it means to live in challenging times. In this unit students choose one of several different streams of study to explore how particular literary epochs, movements and/or genres challenge political hierarchies, narrate social justice, create empathy for humans and the natural world, and engage with conceptual or technological innovations. Learn how major literary figures grappled with the global issues of their own interconnected worlds through dedication to their craft and the enduring search for freedom and meaning.

Literary Responses to Global Issues

This course introduces the discipline of literary studies through case studies of a wide and diverse selection of shorter fiction. It will combine detailed attention to the formal design of the fiction with a consideration of geographical and social location, and historical context. The literature will be drawn from Ireland, the United Kingdom, the Caribbean, United States of America, and Australia. The course examines literary form and language and develops methods of close reading and is designed to increase your confidence when responding to literature. It also looks at the study of literature as a discipline with its own history, topics, methods, and debates. It considers how the study of literature can be an important practical, vocational, cultural, and social component of a university education.

Meet one of literature’s most famous characters in Charlotte Bronte’s Jane Eyre. Resurrect the story of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein. Journey into Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness. Explore what makes these novels and more considered ‘literary’.

In this subject students will engage with critical race theory and the history of Western expansion through concepts of colonialism, modernity and globalisation. Students will investigate key texts in literature, film and theory to explore the distribution of political and economic power in the specific places in the world throughout history. Decolonising Place

This subject was previously known as Classic Texts.This subject explores the complex relation between culture, historical context and modes of representation. Through studying a range of cultural texts, it will consider why and how different narrative forms and generic conventions in fiction and non-fiction narrative emerge, endure and transform across time and space. Building on the range of concepts and tools introduced to students in ENGL1001 Literature: From Medieval to Modern, this subject focuses on how literature developed throughout the twentieth century to the present day. It analyses how English, Australian and American writers – poets, playwrights, novelists, graphic novelists and screenwriters – responded in profoundly intellectual and visceral ways to the wars, calamities, technological change and digital disruptions of what Eric Hobsbawm calls the ‘Age of Extremes’. We trace patterns of alienation and anomie, but also the growing urgency of hope and human rights in literary responses to the modern world. Continuing to develop university level skills in critical reading, textual analysis and writing about literary texts, this subject also introduces students to theories of visual literacy and critical studies, equipping students with the tools to interpret different kinds of narratives.

Seek to understand how poets, playwrights, novelists, graphic novelists and screenwriters responded to the world around them – including wars and technological change – reflecting this in their texts. Build on your skills in critiquing narratives.

Narrative Fiction functions as a ‘gateway’ to the Literary Studies major but may also be taken as an elective. This subject aims to provide both a comprehensive introduction to narrative fiction and a sound basis for later work in the discipline of literary studies. Narrative Fiction introduces you to the study of narrative fiction (in the form of novels and short stories) through familiarisation with some of the key tools and concepts of narrative analysis. This subject provides you with the means to investigate how narrative texts are constructed, and why they are constructed as they are. The first module provides you with a tool kit that will allow you to analyse the rhetoric of fiction. The second module introduces you to realism, the most important single influence on the novel. The third and fourth modules present an overview of key developments in prose fiction since the early twentieth century, such as modernism and postmodernism.
