In this subject, you will learn design, management, extraction, integration, and reporting of health data. You will gain practical skills in developing and maintaining fully relational health databases using national health data standards and models. Theoretical and logical principles of health database and system administration will be introduced, including entity-relationship diagrams, normalisation, meta-data and an introduction to SQL for relational database queries and reporting. Specialised tools for visualisation of health data sets will also be taught.

Health Database Fundamentals

In this subject you will undertake theoretical studies at the University, and a three-week (equivalent) supervised, professional practice placement in the Health Information Service of an allocated, regional healthcare facility in Australia. You will achieve practice competencies and reinforce professional discipline knowledge. You will undertake key functions on placement to gain understanding of the management, informatics, data analysis, and clinical classificatory roles of hospital health information managers. Prior to placement, you are introduced to the functional components of a Health Information Service and the responsibilities of Health Information Managers in relation to the management of health records, building on the knowledge gained in HIM1003 and developing skills in a related health business communication genre.This subject includes synchronous sessions held during business hours, this means that you will attend sessions each week simultaneously with your facilitator and classmates. This subject is recommended for second-year undergraduate students who have completed all first-year subjects in the Bachelor of Health Information Management.Hospital on-site placements are a core requirement for all students regardless of the instance (blended or online) in which you are enrolled. To meet professional competency requirements students must pass both the professional placement and academic components of the subject.

Hospital Professional Practice

In this subject, you will develop higher level classification skills to a level of competency that qualifies you professionally, as a workforce entry-level clinical/medical coder. You will further develop your working knowledge of medical science and terminology and be introduced to common clinical documentation deficiencies and practice clinical documentation improvement skills. You will be introduced to the health classification-financial relationship within the context of Activity Based Funding and the National Funding Model and develop a deeper understanding of the classification system by examining Diagnostic-Related Group (DRG) and National Weighted Activity Unit (NWAU) assignment. You will have exposure to State and Territory specific guidelines relevant to admitted care data items, which can impact on coding. This subject is graded only as a Pass (P) or Fail (F). A mark of 75% or greater is required to achieve a Pass grade in line with industry standards and expectations. Recommended for students who have completed all first-year subjects in the Bachelor of Health Information Management.

Health Classification C

In this subject, you will develop your competence and confidence in the use of the current edition of the Australian-Modified version of the World Health Organization&#39;s International Classification of Diseases, the Australian Classification of Health Interventions, and the Australian Coding Standards for accurate assignment of codes in a timely manner. You will gain familiarity in searching for and applying ratified coding advice to your code assignment. You will develop your working knowledge of medical science and terminology and be introduced to common clinical documentation deficiencies and methods for improvement. This subject is graded as a Pass (P) or Fail (F). A mark of 75% or greater is required to achieve a Pass grade in line with industry standards and expectations. Recommended for students who have completed all first-year subjects in the Bachelor of Health Information Management.

Health Classification B

In this subject, you will learn about the functions of health information examined in the context of organisational governance. You will demonstrate your understanding of the complex interrelationships between people, organisational structure, processes, technology and associated outcomes using case studies. The purpose of the subject is to help you develop understandings of the multi-purposes of health information for health care decision making, providing the critical evidence in patient care outcomes and organisational performance, as it relates to quality service delivery and patient safety. You will use audit tools to measure and aggregate data to illustrate performance and opportunities for improvement. This subject helps you to understand the important role that the Health Information Manager plays in providing performance-based information as well as monitoring and reporting upon clinical data for service improvement opportunities.This subject is recommended for second-year undergraduate students who have completed all first-year subjects in the Bachelor of Health Information Management. This subject includes synchronous sessions held during business hours. This means that you will attend sessions each week simultaneously with your facilitator and classmates.

Health Information Governance

In this subject, you are introduced to the broad concepts of health data and system development lifecyle (SDLC) and the purpose, scope, design and functionalities of health information systems. You will explore the theoretical concepts behind systems planning, analysis, design, implementation, evaluation, support and maintenance of the systems development lifecycle including issues that impact systems, data and information security. Through your assessments, you will demonstrate technical skills in systems planning, analysis and design phases of the SDLC by creating user stories and data flow diagrams as well as evaluating systems design. You will develop an understanding of how health professionals interact with the health information systems development lifecycle.

Health Information Systems Analysis and Design

In this subject you will be introduced to types, uses and applications, of personal and aggregate health data and other information within Australian healthcare agencies. Administrative and clinical systems used for capturing health information on individual patients and clients will be examined. Clinical recording methodologies, health information standards and decision support systems are introduced. The uses of aggregate data are studied in relation to information systems; health information flow; and health data quality and integrity. Electronic and manual systems for health record identification, filing, and tracking are discussed. Case studies, enquiries, and professional placements are used to apply critical theories to health applications. You will integrate theory and practice by undertaking a short five-day professional practice placement in the Health Information Service of a healthcare agency to which you are assigned. Hospital on-site placements are a core requirement for all students regardless of the instance (blended or online) in which you are enrolled. Management Of Health Information

In this subject you will develop an introductory working knowledge of the fundamental conventions and rules for classification of diseases and health interventions using the current Australian version of the World Health Organization&#39;s International Classification of Diseases (ICD-10-AM), the Australian Classification for Health Interventions (ACHI) and the Australian Coding Standards (ACS). You will develop an understanding of the complexities of the classification process. You will develop skills in medical record abstraction and interpretation to support the application of health classification systems. You will develop competency in classificatory practice within the parameters of expected industry timeframes and levels of accuracy. You will gain knowledge in diagnostic, therapeutic and radiological techniques, and drug therapy. Only a Pass or Fail is awarded. A Pass will reflect a grade 75% or greater. This is in line with industry standards and expectations This subject includes synchronous sessions held during business hours. Introduction To Health Classification A

This subject is the second of two Masters project subjects involving supervised independent research in/of a discipline-relevant topic. This subject focuses on the completion and presentation of the research commenced in HUMN600 Masters Research Project 1, and will be taken in the next available study period following that subject. The specific nature of the project, the methods of research and the submission format will be determined in consultation with a discipline supervisor and may include professionally orientated tasks or components. The chosen research work involves supervised completion of a dissertation or creative project with exegesis.﻿Please Note: If it’s your first time studying a Curtin University subject, you’ll need to complete their compulsory ‘Academic Integrity Program’.
