This subject introduces students to the disciplines of criminology and criminal justice. It begins with an examination of the nature of crime and how it is defined and measured in contemporary society. The subject then provides an overview of the impact of criminological theories on our understanding of crime problems and the implications for criminal justice responses. A major part of the subject is focused on the dimensions of crime and the way crime is shaped by a range of personal and social characteristics. For example, we explore the relationship between crime and social class, the links between age and crime, the relationship between gender and crime, and the reasons for the substantial over-representation of Indigenous people in all parts of the criminal justice system in Australia. Importantly, the subject also explores the main criminological theories that have shaped how we understand why crime occurs, which have direct implications for how we respond to and reduce crime. These theories include structure and process theories, individual difference theories, and meaning making theories.

Examine crime and the ways it’s defined and explained in contemporary society. Study the relationship between crime and class, youth and crime (and the response), gender and crime, and the over-representation of Indigenous people.

Introduction to Criminology and Criminal Justice

An understanding of how the legal system works is a valuable skill for students pursuing a wide range of career outcomes. This subject is suited to non-law students and provides a comprehensive introduction to legal studies, starting you on the path to achieving an understanding of how legal systems operate in Australia and elsewhere. You will explore the ways in which the law is made, and how law applies in various contemporary contexts. As part of your study, you will also develop introductory level skills in legal research, writing and analysis.

This subject provides an overview of the various areas within the criminal justice system in which frontline workers come across people with mental disorders. It examines the way in which the criminal justice system (including police, court, and correctional staff) deals with individuals with mental disorders. In particular, the subject focuses on the identification and treatment of individuals with mental disorders; relevant processes and decision-making in different elements of the criminal justice system; examining contemporary approaches to definitions, diagnostic tools, notions of criminal responsibility and fitness to stand trial; and the use of psychological knowledge, theory, and research to guide reflective practice and build personal, professional resilience.

Investigate how police, courts, and corrections interact with people with mental disorders. You’ll use psychological theory to explore mental health issues that youth, Indigenous people, and women face in the system. Learn the symptoms. Build resilience.

Mental Health, Psychology and the Criminal Justice System

This subject introduces students to law, government, and criminal justice in Australia. It explores how laws are made, the influence of politics on law reform, the role of the media, protections for human rights, and the elements of criminal responsibility. It considers the historical treatment of First Nations peoples in Australia&#39;s legal system and the role that law plays in promoting justice and accountability. This knowledge provides a foundation for further study on criminal law and justice systems.

Law, Crime and Justice

Students discover how the rules of contract formation and operation apply in the business world. Students learn how to understand common business contractual terms and implications to develop an appreciation of how contracts are used to allocate risk. Global, technological, social and ethical issues in relation to contracts are explored and finally, students learn about common law rules dealing with disputes and damages and how businesses resolve contractual disputes in the real world.Please Note: If it’s your first time studying a Curtin University subject you’ll need to complete their compulsory ‘Academic Integrity Program’. Sharpen your understanding of contract law principles. Learn how contracts are formed, negotiated and performed. Explore the circumstances in which a contract can be terminated. Focus particularly on the role of the contract in the business world.

Why do some problems come to the attention of governments while others do not? Who is involved in the policy-making process? Pressure groups, media, think tanks; what are their goals? How are policies evaluated? Theoretical explanations are combined with practical examples from Australia and overseas to provide students with a critical understanding of how policy is made. Public Policy Analysis

This subject explores the international politics of the Indo-Pacific, focusing particularly on questions of international security and strategy. The aims of this course are as follows:<ul><li>To introduce you to the international politics of security and strategy in the Indo-Pacific through the lens of contested strategic spaces and geographic sub-regions;</li><li>To integrate an understanding of how the region’s security and strategic arrangements relate to the wider dynamics of international politics;</li><li>To engage with and utilise International Relations theories and concepts, in the context of Indo-Pacific security;</li><li>To provide the analytic and intellectual foundation for further academic research on the region and/or work which requires a sound understanding of the security and strategic dynamics of the contemporary Indo-Pacific;</li><li>To develop further students’ critical and analytical skills through the engagement with a diverse and challenging theoretical and empirical literature, interrogated through the online content material, assessments, and class participation.</li></ul>

International Security in the Indo-Pacific Region

Criminology Skills is designed to develop your academic skills that will be required to achieve success throughout the Criminology degree. Through a series of guided and supported seminars you will participate in applied learning activities to develop your research, academic writing, referencing, and presentation skills. In addition, through group based activities you will also begin to develop employability skills of problem solving, conflict resolution, teamwork, and time management.The subject is also designed for you to begin asking the right questions about crime, harm, and justice. The subject unpacks what crime is, when, where and how it occurs, who is implicated or involved, and why it is understood in particular ways. You will develop important skills in thinking about contemporary criminological debates through understanding varying perspectives surrounding key case studies discussed in lectures and seminars.

Criminology Skills

This subject is a critical introduction to the Australian legal system that addresses the operation, aims, and institutions of criminal justice. It equips students with foundational knowledge of the operation of criminal justice and how the legal system addresses basic questions of criminological and sociological importance. The subject addresses the relationship between crime and law in Australia; the making of laws by the Parliament and Courts; venues and methods of legal adjudication and interpretation; and the complex interactions between actors that comprise the legal system, including lawyers, police, magistrates and the media. The sustainability of the legal system is evaluated in its historical, ethical, economic and social context.

This subject formulates the procedures related to digital forensic and investigation in a computer and a networking scenario. Students critically appraise the key concepts associated with the data hiding, evidence collection and validation and traffic analysis required to perform forensic analysis in a digital environment. Students learn about the importance of the legal considerations and documentation of forensic evidence. Case studies are incorporated to teach practical forensic tools.
