The Bachelor of Global Security provides understandings of contemporary challenges to security, including terrorism, political violence, transnational crime, global poverty, climate change and environmental stress, and analyses their political, historical and social context. Graduates will have the skills to respond to such challenges in the short-term, and develop robust solutions. Such skills are highly sought after in many public and private sector organisations - security, law enforcement and defence agencies and consultancies, and organisations concerned with aid, human security, development, and human rights.The aim of this course is to equip students with knowledge concerning the nature and complex intertwined causes of security threats so that they can assess a range of types and levels of security threats and offer analyses to work towards effective interventions and long-term solutions to these challenges.Terrorism, and efforts to counter it, has come to reshape national and global politics in the 21st Century. In the Terrorism and Counterterrorism Studies major, students will explore the meaning, evolution and complex causes of terrorism and political violence. Students will gain specialised knowledge of various counter-terrorism strategies, policies and politics adopted by governments and security agencies in response to these threats. The major equips students with specialised analytical skills to analyse contexts in which terrorism occurs and evaluate counter terrorism policies and strategies.

You’ll cover terrorism, political violence, crimes that have effects across national borders, global poverty and even climate change. Learn how to combat situations in the short-term and use prevention longer-term.

Bachelor of Global Security (Terrorism and Counterterrorism Studies)

It’s a sad reality that millions of people around the world are living in poverty. International aid and development can come in many forms including money, medicine, food, education, disaster relief and recovery, helping communities develop a better future, and much more.In this degree, you’ll explore the challenges and the changing approaches to international aid by governments, international organisations and aid agencies, and gain an in-depth understanding of international development programs and approaches.An important part of international aid and development is helping people create change themselves. You’ll focus on how to work with people to help them develop skills for what’s known as participatory development practice. This is a process that empowers people with the skills, knowledge and access to resources they need to make a lasting difference in their own community.

Why do some problems come to the attention of governments while others do not? Who is involved in the policy-making process? Pressure groups, media, think tanks; what are their goals? How are policies evaluated? Theoretical explanations are combined with practical examples from Australia and overseas to provide students with a critical understanding of how policy is made. Public Policy Analysis

Security has traditionally been associated with the integrity of the state and its protection by military means. Since the end of the Cold War, however, international war and state survival seem less severe threats to security as compared to a range of new and evolving security challenges. The latter include climate change, pandemics, inequality and economic underdevelopment, and irregular migration, among others. This has given rise to debates about whether security is a problematic social construct. Whom it should be for and how, and it should focus primarily on the well-being of individuals (human security)?This unit provides students with a comprehensive introduction to the history of security and conceptual debates about the term. 21st Century Security Challenges

Internship

This subject was previously known as POL291 International Security Studies.
This subject defines international security broadly to incorporate political, societal, military, environmental, economic and technological factors. After examining the competing theories of international politics and different conceptions of security, the focus shifts to the post-Cold War international system and especially the roles of the Subjected Nations and international law in international security. It utilises case studies from various regions to explain the changing dimensions of security.

Understand international politics, and security and strategic studies. Examine competing theories and different conceptions of security, the post-Cold War system, the roles of the United Nations and international law in international security. 

International Security Studies

This subject was previously known as PTR293 Terrorism in a Globalised World.
Since the terrorist attacks of 11 September 2001 the spectre of terrorism and resultant ‘War on Terror’ have come to dominate and in many respects reshape national and international politics. The aim of this subject is to provide a critical understanding of terrorism and counter-terrorism politics and policy within the context of a globalised world. Drawing upon both contemporary and historical case studies, the subject considers the complex interrelationships between forces of globalisation, political interest, ideology and violence.

Understand terrorism and counter-terrorism politics and policy. Draw on contemporary and historical case studies to consider the relationships between forces of globalisation, political interest, ideology and violence.

Violent Extremism and Radicalisation

This unit introduces students to Australian foreign and security policy, exploring the regional and international contexts in which Australia pursues its national interests. It traces how and why Australian foreign and security policy has changed over time, and the degree to which it is shaped by participation in international organisations, alliances and regional partnerships. The unit examines Australia’s relationship with such great powers as the United States, Britain and China, as well as other players in the Indo-Pacific region. Australian Foreign and Security Policy

NOTE: If you study this subject in Winter, the subject will be a shorter duration (5 weeks) and will require at least 20 hours of study per week.This subject was previously known as PTR100 Perspectives on Security and Terrorism.This subject introduces the concepts of security, risk, terrorism and counterterrorism and examines how various agents in international society perceive and employ them. It explains how and why terrorism undermines security and what measures are often taken to counter it. The subject also analyses the relationships between terrorism and religion, the media, democracy and international law. This subject will prepare you to take a leadership role in the workplace that allows collaboration in ethical decision-making. The focus is on recognising actual and potential ethico-legal dilemmas in professional practice, and how decisions are made, justified and reviewed. A conceptual framework will be used to explore the decision making process while examining actual and perceived roles, professional values, and communication and collaboration practices when decisions with an ethical and/or legal dimension have to be made.

Bioethics and Law for Health Care Leadership

This subject was previously known as POL213 Politics and Security in Southeast Asia: Terrorists, Gangsters and the State.This subject examines the historical context and interrelationships of a broad range of non-traditional and human security issues in contemporary Southeast Asia. The subject adopts a critical comparative approach addressing topics such as civil conflict, the direction of political regimes, environmental and resource security, poverty and inequality and health security.
