Developing Modern Languages Conversational Skills

German is a major world language, with more than 130 million native speakers in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, and many other countries. There are German-speaking minority groups in over 42 countries across the globe. In this subject you will develop your listening, speaking, reading and writing skills, which will allow you to increase your proficiency in everyday basic written and spoken German. You will achieve language proficiency equivalent to Level A1/2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. Enhance your ability to communicate in German, whether for business or personal relationships.

German Language 1B

63 million people in the world speak Italian as their first language. Millions of others know and use this musical, expressive language to communicate for business and pleasure purposes. This subject is for students with little or no knowledge of Italian. When you study this subject you will learn the basic grammatical structures such as nouns, adjectives, articles, and present and perfect tenses of verbs, and practice speaking modern Italian as it is used in colloquial interaction. You will also be introduced to Italian culture through texts dealing with various aspects of Italian history, arts and lifestyle.

Italian Language 1A

This subject employs &#39;Extensive Reading&#39; methodology. You will read large volumes of Japanese text matched to your individual proficiency level in order to acquire and consolidate level-appropriate vocabulary and grammatical structures. Socio-cultural knowledge and awareness are also enhanced via the thematic content of the texts. The readings/stories provided include both fiction and non-fiction and most have accompanying audio and illustrations. You will answer comprehension questions and provide written reflective comments (in Japanese) on the completion of each reading/story. This subject is an elective that aims to bolster your reading skills and support your progress in the core Japanese language units.

Extensive Reading in Japanese

Indonesia is Australia’s closest Asian neighbour, and an increasingly important trading partner. More than 300 million people across Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei use Indonesian for business and personal interactions. With Indonesia’s economy growing rapidly and the free-trade agreement between Australia and Indonesia, employment opportunities in this region are increasing, and knowing how to communicate in Indonesian will give you a competitive advantage in many fields; for example, government, business, education, legal, engineering or health professions. This subject provides you with an introduction to contemporary Indonesian language. It develops basic aural, oral, reading and writing skills. Attention is given to the socio-cultural context of the language, and to functional fluency. This subject will also introduce you to many aspects of Indonesian cultural life.

Indonesian Language 1A

The study of English and its use is a central focus in countries such as Australia. This subject has been designed to explore how the English language is used in personal, community, academic and professional contexts while you gain insights into language use in a multicultural and plurilingual society. It will enhance your ability to adapt to a variety of changing workplace and social contexts. You will develop knowledge and understanding about language development, a social view of language and varieties of spoken and written English and examine how spoken and written language combine with other ways of making meaning in multimodal texts. You will apply your understanding of informal, formal, diagnostic, formative and summative assessment strategies to your own language and literacy skills and needs. You will apply this social view of language when working with a range of texts.

Explore how English is used in society, zooming in on the differences that develop across social and cultural groups. You’ll analyse variations in spoken and written English in schools, homes, and the workplace. Unpack how people derive meaning from words.

This subject is for students who have completed HSC-level Japanese (or have equivalent proficiency). The subject aims to develop your early intermediate-level communicative competence in Japanese. You will enhance your early intermediate listening and speaking skills in Japanese and your early intermediate skills in reading and writing Japanese. You will consolidate your knowledge of approximately 150-200 previously studied elementary kanji, and learn an additional 130 new kanji (approximately). In this subject you will gain an awareness of some aspects of Japanese society and culture relevant to intercultural communication at early intermediate level and you will create language learning strategies that you can employ as you progress.

Japanese Language 2A

In this subject you will build on the structural topics of the prerequisite subject. Using examples from English and other languages, you will continue to explore the basic structural features of language, including techniques of phonemic analysis, morphology, syntax and pragmatics. You’ll learn how to recognise the common sounds found in human languages and the symbols used to represent them. This subject will teach you how to identify, analyse and evaluate the role that language plays in Australian society and in other societies and cultures. You’ll also look at global varieties of English and topics in sociolinguistics including language variation, diglossia, bilingualism, and multilingualism. Finally, you will consider the history of writing and how diverse types of writing systems are organised. There is an emphasis on problem-solving and data analysis.

Foundations of Linguistics

Language is a fundamental aspect of our humanity. In this subject you will receive an introductory overview of the basic structural features of language, and the techniques used by linguists to analyse the sounds, words, and grammar of any language. You will explore the role of language in society, touching on varieties of language (dialects, standards, etc.) and the attitudes people have towards different kinds of language. The subject also explores how children acquire language, and the processes adults go through as they learn a second language (first- and second- language acquisition). There is an emphasis on problem-solving and data analysis; however, you do not need to know any language other than English to undertake this subject.
