This is an intermediate Indonesian subject which builds on HMN207. It is suitable for students who have some significant prior Indonesian language learning. Through more advanced reading, you will be introduced to more complex content. You will be provided with skills that enable you to provide advice as well as to discuss more complex situation, such as illness, personal and business issues.

Indonesian 2B

This is an intermediate Indonesian subject, suitable for students who have some significant prior Indonesian language learning. The main aim is to provide you with the vocabulary, sentence shells and cultural skills that will enable you to communicate about education and work; to communicate descriptively about the history and characteristics of places; as well as skills to express a variety of opinions about them. You will learn basic skills in debating, interviewing and public speaking.

Indonesian 2A

This introductory subject builds on TAS-HMN101. It is suitable for students who have some prior Indonesian language learning. The main aim is to provide you with the vocabulary, sentence shells and cultural skills that will enable you to ask and answer questions about the things you usually do each day as well as skills that will enable you to plan a future visit to Indonesia and express a variety of opinions about it. You will learn skills to construct extended narratives and will be able to speak more fluently on your activities and travel.

Introduction to Indonesian 1B

Students are invited to explore the contemporary situation of language in Aboriginal Australia, contextualised in its various social settings, along with a strong emphasis on First Voice. This includes a focus on the languages of Victoria and language revitalisation, as well as new varieties of Aboriginal language such as Kriol. The subject provides students with the opportunity to reflect on understandings of language and culture, continuity and changes in the face of disruption, and on their connection with the local environment and its people.

Language in Aboriginal Australia

This subject is available to students who have no knowledge of Japanese. It is an introductory subject focusing on elementary spoken and written Japanese. You will learn to read hiragana and katakana syllabic scripts as well as approximately 30 kanji characters. You will also be introduced to Japanese culture. Culture is embedded throughout language, so learning another language develops your intercultural communication skills, preparing you to be responsive and agile in varied situations. Those who have prior learning of Japanese should contact the Japanese Program coordinator for a placement test (k.okano@latrobe.edu.au). You may be asked to move to another level by the subject coordinator prior to the university census date (usually in week 3 or 4). This is a studyflex subject, offered for both face-to-face and online students. The lecture is delivered online, live, and recorded and uploaded to LMS. Face-to-face students attend tutorials on campus, while online students attend live, online tutorials that are not recorded.

In today’s global economy, the ability to communicate in more than one language is essential. Not only is French widely used as a working language in business environments making it a career asset, it is also the language of many great works of film and literature. If you have little or no knowledge of French, this subject will help you develop the ability to communicate in the French speaking world and enhance your appreciation of French culture; music, film, theatre. You will learn how to read, understand, write and speak an elementary level of French. By the end of the unit you will be acquainted with basic grammatical structures. This subject also introduces you to many elements of French life and Francophone culture.

This subject was previously known as JPNX101/JNPX1010 Introductory Japanese I.This subject provides introductory Japanese language instruction for students with no previous knowledge of Japanese. Students develop basic speaking, listening, reading &amp; writing skills, including mastery of the hiragana &amp; katakana scripts. By the end of the course, students should be able to describe their surroundings, ask questions, make plans, and effectively participate in a variety of fundamental conversations. Furthermore, the course will also assist students in developing an awareness of sociocultural issues which influence Japanese language use. The class provides opportunities for interactive language learning, and a wide variety of methods for Japanese practice through the use of online resources.

Japanese Studies I

This subject examines the relationship between language and culture and explores the different varieties of language and dialects, as well as the various styles and registers that can exist within any one language. The subject explores theories of language and language learning, including transcultural communication, to enhance the ability and confidence of teachers to work successfully in culturally and linguistically diverse classrooms. Specific reference will be made to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander languages and dialects as well as people learning English as an additional language.

This subject was previously known as Beginning Japanese. This subject introduces basic communicative skills in Japanese at an elementary level. Students acquire the four essential language skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing characters (Hiragana, Katakana, and Kanji) through ample practice in communicative activities supported by digital technology. This introductory course introduces students to spoken and written Thai. In this course, students will learn the tones, consonants, vowels, essential grammar, polite particles, and the writing system of the Thai language. Students will also have the opportunity to learn a range of simple sentence patterns. They will learn to read and write basic sentences which will enable them to use the language in day-to-day situations. The course covers basic knowledge of Thailand, greetings, self and family, time and date, describing things around you, and asking for help, information, and directions. Cultural issues in relation to language use and politeness will also be included.This is a fast paced academic course at a University level, Via face-to-face video at a set time prescribed by the University. Please be aware of potential time zone differences.
