This subject concentrates on contemporary travel writing in the short story/feature/essay form and has instructional value for both creative and professional writing students.

Writing for Media introduces you to the practice of writing for various media platforms and audiences. The focus of the subject will be to teach you how to write a range of media texts and to develop skills in editing and honing your work. The key learning outcomes of writing concisely, effective revision, distilling information and sound knowledge of grammar and style are transferable across a range of vocations. You will develop a folio of written work.

This course builds a foundation for a successful career in journalism, strategic communication and public relations. Critical reflection will allow students to examine their roles as ethical and socially responsible professionals in a dynamic and changing communication landscape.Students should not enrol in this subject if they have successfully completed 1505LHS Introduction to Communication and Journalism at Griffith University because they are considered academically equivalent.

The key journalistic rounds of crime and courts, politics and parliaments, councils, health and education, social issues, sport and leisure, economics and finance, science and specialties and consumer affairs will be covered.Working with an experienced teacher you will complete practical news gathering and writing tasks. You will meet deadlines, reflect on ethical issues, apply your understanding of media law and gather news across a range of fields. The online forum component of the subject encourages you to relate your practical work to the relevant literature in the area and discuss your views with your peers. Delve into the challenges and constraints of journalistic research. In this subject you will explore difficult and complex decisions within the professional environment. Journalism graduates are increasingly expected to be jacks and jills of all trades, and masters of combining them. In this subject, you will build skills in multimedia storytelling. You will be creating an online multimedia feature story, incorporating text, video, audio, photography and data visualisation, using a range of platforms. This subject includes live sessions with the expectation of student attendance and participation in either weekly online or face-to-face tutorials. These classes may fall in business hours.

This subject teaches the techniques of audio news writing and explores podcasting and the use of sound in storytelling. Through the production of news bulletins and individual podcasts you will develop interviewing, recording, voice presentation and editing skills. The subject also covers how to create, develop and tell stories in the context of a podcast, including how to write to audio, and how to develop and practice presenting skills to enable the production of compelling podcasts. This subject includes live sessions with the expectation of student attendance and participation in either weekly online or face-to-face tutorials. These classes may fall in business hours.

Podcasting

The Emerging Journalist introduces you to the shifting roles and responsibilities of journalists and journalism within liberal democratic societies. You will appreciate the contemporary media landscape and the role of journalists and media organisations in relation to social, economic, political and cultural power structures. Topics and issues covered include best practices in news and feature writing, media ethics, and working with sources.  Assessment tasks are designed to give you an opportunity to start building a portfolio of journalistic work. This is a level 1 subject.
