You will develop a folio of written work.

This course builds a foundation for a successful career in journalism, strategic communication and public relations. Critical reflection will allow students to examine their roles as ethical and socially responsible professionals in a dynamic and changing communication landscape.Students should not enrol in this subject if they have successfully completed 1505LHS Introduction to Communication and Journalism at Griffith University because they are considered academically equivalent.

Journalism graduates are increasingly expected to be jacks and jills of all trades, and masters of combining them. In this subject, you will build skills in multimedia storytelling. You will be creating an online multimedia feature story, incorporating text, video, audio, photography and data visualisation, using a range of platforms. This subject includes live sessions with the expectation of student attendance and participation in either weekly online or face-to-face tutorials. These classes may fall in business hours.

This subject teaches the techniques of audio news writing and explores podcasting and the use of sound in storytelling. Through the production of news bulletins and individual podcasts you will develop interviewing, recording, voice presentation and editing skills. The subject also covers how to create, develop and tell stories in the context of a podcast, including how to write to audio, and how to develop and practice presenting skills to enable the production of compelling podcasts. This subject includes live sessions with the expectation of student attendance and participation in either weekly online or face-to-face tutorials. These classes may fall in business hours.

The Emerging Journalist introduces you to the shifting roles and responsibilities of journalists and journalism within liberal democratic societies. You will appreciate the contemporary media landscape and the role of journalists and media organisations in relation to social, economic, political and cultural power structures. Topics and issues covered include best practices in news and feature writing, media ethics, and working with sources.  Assessment tasks are designed to give you an opportunity to start building a portfolio of journalistic work. This is a level 1 subject.
