This subject is designed to provide you with hands on practical experience developing software in a project environment. You work in teams and will complete projects from inception to implementation.
This subject includes a Work Integrated Learning (WIL) experience in which your knowledge and skills will be applied and assessed in a real or simulated workplace context and where feedback from industry and/ or community is integral to your experience.
As the project teams and projects will be assigned during the first week all enrolled students are advised to engage with the subject from the beginning of week 1.
Please note: This subject is considered to be a capstone subject for the Bachelor of Information Technology degree in which students demonstrate their competency in a (simulated) Work Integrated Learning (WIL) environment.
All students seeking the Bachelor of Information Technology award will need to complete this subject.

Programming Project

This subject aims to provide a broad introduction to the fundamentals of data communication and network technology. The emphasis is on higher aspects of data communication from the perspective of computer scientists and information technologists; the subject covers the underlying mechanisms and their characteristics that need to be considered by communicating application software.
Topics include:

Software Engineering Project Management

This course is an introduction to computing ethics, law and employability. It is intended for computing students who have not studied business principles, or who have little work experience in industry. The course provides a survival kit for computing graduates entering the workforce. During this course, you should consider computing ethical issues, such as information privacy, computer crime, computer security, social networks, online identity. During this course, you should also consider the international legal frameworks available to protect software system development. This includes non-disclosure agreements, employment contracts, intellectual property law (copyright, patents, licensing, royalties), trademarks and warranty disclaimers. Additionally, you should examine the marketing of a software system development, involving SWOT analysis and action plan.

Gain commercial insight into computing ethics, law and marketing in a professional, technical setting. Dig into the dark corners of malware, computer crime and terrorism. Study privacy, patents, royalties and global laws protecting software systems.

Professional Computing Practice

This course teaches programming principles, skills and practices for modern software development, continuing the study of software design and development in pre-requisite courses. Concepts in this include dynamic memory management, advanced typing and polymorphism, automated build systems, defensive programming, debugging, testing, and adherence to modern coding standards and practices. This course uses the C++ programming language for the practical implementation and practice of these concepts. This course may serve as a foundation for further studies in Information Technology, Computer Science and Software Engineering.

Advanced Programming Techniques

This subject was previously known as “Software Architecture: Design and Implementation”
This subject provides students with an advanced understanding of software development with an emphasis on architecture and design, and how this relates to programming and implementation. Students will explore advanced object oriented concepts and the relationship between design in Unified Modelling Language (UML) and its expression in code and how this is supported by modelling tools and development platforms; parallelism using multi-threading, and first principles client server architecture using socket communications and basic protocols. Students will also explore common object oriented design patterns and their application in domain-specific contexts as well as user interface programming.
The subject builds upon existing programming knowledge using Java as the implementation platform, and assumes students already have a basic understanding of Java programming and basic object oriented concepts.

Explore object orientated concepts for designing software architecture. Learn how UML talks in code backed by multi-threading and modelling tools. Build on your prior knowledge, and use interface programming with Java as the implementation platform.

Further Programming

This course introduces Object-Oriented programming using the Java programming language. This course covers: algorithm development using standard control structures; design methods such as step-wise refinement and object oriented programming; the use of standard Java classes and interfaces; the use of standard APIs; I/O processing; and programming style and code reuse.

Program a future in Object-Orientated Programming using Java classes and interfaces. Create algorithms to specification using standard control structures and step-wise refinement. Reuse code and devise strategies to test new software.
