This subject examines the transformation of Russia and China from the reforms of the 1990s to the restoration of totalitarian controls under Putin and Xi Jinping. By a comparative approach, you will learn about how these states grappled with the legacy of communism, reformed political institutions, transformed their economies, and embarked upon expansionist projects. The course will illuminate the domestic challenges faced by these regimes, such as corruption, civic activism, ethnonationalism, and separatism. It will also pose questions about the significance of their collaboration on the international stage, their competition in Central Asia, and their relationship with the West.This is a level 3 subject. Please consider the subject pre-requisites before enrolling. This subject includes live sessions with the expectation of student attendance and participation.

In this subject we survey the development of Australian foreign policy. We begin with an historical overview of foreign policy, highlighting the core concepts and themes required to interpret and evaluate the conduct of foreign affairs. We then survey the key issues in foreign policy-making and Australia&#39;s major foreign relations. Issues include: strategic culture, internationalism and dependence on &#39;great and powerful friends&#39;. Relationships covered include the United States, China, Japan, Indonesia and the South Pacific. We conclude with an appraisal of recent opportunities and challenges, successes and failures, such as responding to the &#39;China Choice&#39;, interventions in the South Pacific and Australia&#39;s response to climate change.

This Level 1 subject is designed to introduce you to the main actors, concepts, institutions and debates of contemporary international relations. Specifically, it will give you the foundational tool-kit to develop your knowledge and understanding of the central security challenges we face in contemporary international relations. Our aim is to give you the theoretical understanding, skills and inclination to dig beyond superficial media representations and develop a deeper and more nuanced understanding of security issues. You will first explore the historical context of international relations and the conceptual building blocks that underpin the international system, including key ideas like sovereignty and the nation-state. We then examine both traditional security issues associated with inter-state conflict and new challenges associated with human and environmental security. You&#39;ll develop a deep appreciation of how we live in an interconnected world, being able to recognize the global context of political issues, and act across cultures and boundaries in international relations. Please note: This is a Level 1 subject that includes live sessions either on-campus or online with the expectation of student attendance and participation.

In this subject, you will study two of Australia’s Asian neighbours, China and Japan. Our understanding of China and Japan via the media and the public discourse is often based on Anglophone Western perspectives. However, there are also ‘Asian’ understandings deriving from long-existing interactions, for example, how Japanese people see China as a nation and ordinary Chinese people and vice versa. You will critically examine different aspects of the two societies from the pre-modern to modern and contemporary times, including governance, social relations, ‘culture’ and engagement with the outside world.

The twenty-first century is already being called the Asian Century. What were the countries and peoples we call Asia like 100 years ago, at the start of the twentieth century? How did they change across the century? And how did this process influence their current prosperity and sense of national identity? The subject will survey the major social, political and cultural changes of the past 100 years of so, including European colonisation, the impact of the expansion of Japan and the Second World War, the rise of Asian nationalisms and the wars of independence, consolidation of national political regimes, economic development and modernisation, the rapid recent rise of China and India.This is a level 2 subject. Please consider the subject pre-requisites before enrolling. This subject includes live sessions with the expectation of student attendance and participation.

This first year subject investigates the dynamics of Australia’s longstanding and complex relationship with the Asian region. We adopt a thematic approach while drawing on timely and relevant examples from across the region, including Japan, China, Indonesia, India, and more. The subject begins with a brief survey of Australia’s historical ties with Asia, then moves on to Australia’s contemporary regional setting. We explore Australia’s dense web of connections to Asia through personal, trade, security and cultural ties. We also consider the sources of tension that complicate the relationship, such as the threat of terrorism, rise of China, democratic rollback, and political instability, while unravelling the differences in history, culture and values that spur, at times, mutual suspicions and ambivalence about Australia’s place in Asia. We also explore efforts to improve Asia literacy and the role of migration and diasporic communities in Australian multiculturalism. The subject is delivered in StudyFlex mode and can be completed fully online or face-to-face at the Bundoora campus.
