Information systems within organisations have evolved at a rapid rate, and this subject provides students with an understanding of both the foundations of business information systems and recent developments of information systems for business. The development of business information systems is generally a collaborative project both within a department and between other departments, and this subject will discuss the challenges of working collaboratively within an organisation and develop these skills through teamwork activities and assessments. Lastly, while information systems provide a wealth of opportunity, the subject will also alert students to the risks and limitations of information systems for businesses and develop their critical thinking by demonstrating the ethical dimensions of information systems for business.

In this subject, you will learn design, management, extraction, integration, and reporting of health data. You will gain practical skills in developing and maintaining fully relational health databases using national health data standards and models. Theoretical and logical principles of health database and system administration will be introduced, including entity-relationship diagrams, normalisation, meta-data and an introduction to SQL for relational database queries and reporting. Specialised tools for visualisation of health data sets will also be taught.

Health Database Fundamentals

In this subject, you will learn about the functions of health information examined in the context of organisational governance. You will demonstrate your understanding of the complex interrelationships between people, organisational structure, processes, technology and associated outcomes using case studies. The purpose of the subject is to help you develop understandings of the multi-purposes of health information for health care decision making, providing the critical evidence in patient care outcomes and organisational performance, as it relates to quality service delivery and patient safety. You will use audit tools to measure and aggregate data to illustrate performance and opportunities for improvement. This subject helps you to understand the important role that the Health Information Manager plays in providing performance-based information as well as monitoring and reporting upon clinical data for service improvement opportunities.This subject is recommended for second-year undergraduate students who have completed all first-year subjects in the Bachelor of Health Information Management. This subject includes synchronous sessions held during business hours. This means that you will attend sessions each week simultaneously with your facilitator and classmates.

Health Information Governance

In this subject, you are introduced to the broad concepts of health data and system development lifecyle (SDLC) and the purpose, scope, design and functionalities of health information systems. You will explore the theoretical concepts behind systems planning, analysis, design, implementation, evaluation, support and maintenance of the systems development lifecycle including issues that impact systems, data and information security. Through your assessments, you will demonstrate technical skills in systems planning, analysis and design phases of the SDLC by creating user stories and data flow diagrams as well as evaluating systems design. You will develop an understanding of how health professionals interact with the health information systems development lifecycle.

Health Information Systems Analysis and Design

This subject provides an introduction to database design, implementation and management. Topics include data modelling, the relational model, SQL, logical and physical database design, database application design, transaction management, concurrency, recovery, security, database architectures and database administration. Databases

This subject covers important concepts of database management systems and recent developments in the area. How various database technologies are utilised to support the need of modern database systems. Several well known RDBMS and non-RDBMS platforms will be observed. Advanced application and implementation of database management systems, such as data analytic queries, non-relational databases and complex data types will be covered as well. Case studies using real industry-based sample dataset and problems will enrich students&#39; experiences. Future trends of database management systems will also be studied and discussed to broaden students&#39; horizon to deal with future advancement in the area.

The widespread application of digital information systems in society today produces vast amounts of data. Appropriate management of this data is essential for it to be an effective tool for decision making and value adding. Introducing you to the concepts of database design, this subject takes you from the conceptual level through to the physical level of database management systems, developing your understanding of the techniques underpinning these systems. You will study relational databases and learn how to model, create and efficiently query them using Structured Query Language (SQL), using relational algebra to provide more generalised data and query definitions within relational database systems. Design strategies to avoid redundancy, concepts of functional dependency, normalisation and relational decomposition are examined. Exploring approaches for connecting external applications to databases, you will also gain an awareness of security issues involved with data access.

This subject introduces methods and techniques for analysing problematic organisational situations, particularly those leading to the development of an information system, and draws on both technical and organisational material to provide the knowledge and skills necessary to design and implement an operational system.
