We share a global responsibility for the sustainable provision of food and the consequences of our food choices. The need to eat determines where, how and why we live. Food Security

Youth is often presented as a period of storm and stress or a time of crisis. On the other hand youth culture is often something many seek out, envy, and desire. This subject will acquaint students with Australian and international literature concerned with the study of youth. Youth Identities

The two-way science subject explores the intersection between Western and Indigenous Science knowledge. We will explore the deep connection that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people have with the land, waters, and sky, and how this has been fostered throughout the millennia. This knowledge encompasses areas of knowledge such as medicine, engineering, ecology, astronomy and sociology. Students will broaden their understanding of Indigenous pedagogy and knowledge transfer, how both Western and Indigenous cultures can mutually benefit from utilising Indigenous science Knowledges, as well as investigating the ways in which students can do so regarding their own field of study. Two Way Science

In this subject, we explore several current debates on matters of importance to Indigenous communities and mainstream Australia. These topics are all contentious and they are often divisive. We take a deep dive into the discourses both for and against and critically reflect on how they shape political action in these spaces. A broad range of voices are examined, including leading Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal thinkers from across the political spectrum and community sector, many of whom hold conflicting reasoning behind their positions. Hot Topics in Indigenous Australia

Australia’s democracy is among the oldest and most stable in the world. Yet the Australian political system is not without its critics or without its challenges. In this subject, students examine the ideas, events, actors and institutions that have shaped the design and operation of the Australian political system. Australian Politics and Government

The environment and environmental crises have had a profound impact on the history of the Australian people and their politics. This subject traces the relationship between people and the environment in Australia from pre-European times to the present-day climate-change crisis. We consider the ways in which Australians have sought to manage, tame and develop the natural environment. We measure the costs of hubris, the lack of ecological humility, and failures in recognising nature’s limits. The subject also considers Australia’s response to environmental issues in its region, where it has oscillated between being a trusted regional partner and crisis responder, to an ecological delinquent. Environmental Crisis in Australia and its Region

This subject consists of a comparative history of the Pacific War, considering Japanese, Australian and American perspectives and the war in its political, social, cultural and military aspects. Topics include the role of the Japanese emperor, the debate over the Pearl Harbor attack, the experience of Australian prisoners-of-war, Japanese wartime civilian experience, the internment of Japanese civilians in Australia and the USA, the importance to all sides of concepts of race, the naval war and kamikaze pilots.Please Note: All students studying at Murdoch University will need to complete the compulsory unit, Murdoch Academic Passport (MAP100), which only takes 2-3 hours to complete online. Soldiers and Civilians: War in the Pacific 1941-1945

The Second World War in Europe demonstrated an unprecedented capacity to mobilise huge numbers of people and to wreak massive damage in the cause of ‘military necessity’. The warring regimes offered inspiring visions of the future in efforts to engage whole populations in military and political offensives. The Second World War in Europe

England under the Tudors was a period of treachery, political intrigue and religious conflict—the effect of which transformed the face of Europe and rebounded through history. Under the reigns of Henry VIII and his daughters, Mary I and Elizabeth I, the Reformation sundered the religious and political unity of Europe, the feudal king was supplanted by a &#39;divine&#39; monarch, and England rose as a world power. England’s security in the same period was shaped by complex international relations, including notable contests with Scotland, France and Spain, the long reach of the Holy Roman Emperor, and the enduring strategic and religious influence of the Pope. Though literature and the arts flourished at home in the Tudor age, giving rise to the works of Shakespeare, Spenser, Donne and Holbein, it was also a period of intense social conflict in which ‘witches’ were hanged and religious dissidents were burned at the stake. In this subject students explore the allies, enemies and impacts of the Tudor monarchs to understand the extraordinary experiences of the English Renaissance.Please Note: All students studying at Murdoch University will need to complete the compulsory unit, Murdoch Academic Passport (MAP100), which only takes 2-3 hours to complete online. The Tudors: Treachery, Politics and Faith in the Age of the Renaissance

The subject engages with the texts of William Shakespeare and his contemporaries, which may include writers such as Christopher Marlowe, John Fletcher, and Aphra Behn, and considers their relevance today.
