This is an intermediate Indonesian subject which builds on HMN207. It is suitable for students who have some significant prior Indonesian language learning. This is an intermediate Indonesian subject, suitable for students who have some significant prior Indonesian language learning. The main aim is to provide you with the vocabulary, sentence shells and cultural skills that will enable you to communicate about education and work; to communicate descriptively about the history and characteristics of places; as well as skills to express a variety of opinions about them. You will learn basic skills in debating, interviewing and public speaking.

Indonesian 2A

This introductory subject builds on TAS-HMN101. It is suitable for students who have some prior Indonesian language learning. The main aim is to provide you with the vocabulary, sentence shells and cultural skills that will enable you to ask and answer questions about the things you usually do each day as well as skills that will enable you to plan a future visit to Indonesia and express a variety of opinions about it. You will learn skills to construct extended narratives and will be able to speak more fluently on your activities and travel.

Introduction to Indonesian 1B

How much of a tale is in the telling? This subject introduces concepts, terms and skills used in the analysis of literary narrative, and applies them to texts drawn from a wide range of genres, periods and nations. The subject will consider key topics in narrative analysis, such as: narrative voice and point of view; the relationship between author, narrator and reader; narrative time; narrative and genre; the unreliable narrator; adaptation of literary narratives to film; the ways literary texts open and close; narrative poetry; and narrative theory.

Telling Tales: Literature and Narrative

This subject aims to develop an awareness of environmental and human health impacts of housing in order to inform critical and creative decision-making in the design and renovation of houses. You will explore how housing affects our own health and the health of the planet, and how sustainable design can reduce environmental impacts and improve wellbeing. You will also learn how to make design choices that are more sustainable in relation to your personal needs and circumstances. The subject will emphasise reflective thinking, practical knowledge and an integrated approach that relates issues of sustainability to quality design, functionality and value.

Introduction to Sustainable Design for Houses

Fire has shaped the evolution of the world we see around us and is fundamental to life. Yet wildfire can also be devastating to human and ecological communities. Today, more and more of us are living in fire prone areas, and wildfires are behaving in new, less predictable ways.  So how do we live with fire - as individuals, and as communities? How do we plan for fire, and how do we respond when fires happen? How do we ensure that we are using fire in a sustainable way? What are the trade-offs involved in fire management? And what might we learn from indigenous Australians, who have used fire skilfully on this continent for over 40,000 years?  Living with Fire is for anyone interested in these complex but practical and fascinating questions about fire in our lives today. You will learn what causes fire and why wildfires behave the way they do. As well as the science of fire, you will learn about the human dimensions of fire and the complex trade-offs involved in fire management between the needs of culture and society, and ecology and biodiversity. You will learn how to evaluate your own level of fire risk and what you can do to plan for fire as an individual. You will also become more empowered to participate in conversations about how we plan for and respond to fire in our local communities.

Living with Fire

This subject focuses on learning research methods to solve real problems. You will come to understand how to design research, define an argument in response to the problems, use scholarly databases, consider ethical issues in data collection, generate field data, analyse and present these data, interpret results, and reflect on all these processes and their application to, for example, policy and professional contexts. The subject is a professional pathway in Masters programs in geography, planning, and spatial sciences.

This subject investigates the components of a healthy and sustainable food system (production to consumption) from a multidisciplinary perspective, focusing on the domains of health, environment, economy and society. Students will critically analyse the concept of the ‘Sustainable Diet’ and the changes needed to ensure that our food system is ecologically sustainable, healthy, and affordable. Students will be exposed to the views of the food industry, food producers and public health experts on food sustainability and will reflect on the implication their own food choices and their impact on the environment. This subject combines case-study and experience-based learning and exposes students to current and emerging trends and issues, equipping them with the essential knowledge and skills to improve our food system.
