Event management is a dynamic environment that encompasses a wide range of time sensitive duties and extensive planning to ensure that the event achieves its desired outcomes. Events require thorough planning that may incorporate concepts of innovative practice.In this subject you will develop key knowledge and skills needed to manage events. You will explore topics such as marketing, sponsorship, budgeting, resource management, and stakeholder engagement. You will experience managing events through case studies, industry engagement, and the creation of your own event management plan – based on an evidence-based approach. Through these learning activities and experiences, you will be able to identify the roles, skills, methods, and processes involved in managing an event.

Rapid social change impacts on the ways people socialise, spend their money, work, and participate in leisure. The leisure industry is also going through rapid change with the emergence of contemporary forms of leisure such as extreme sports, multi-purpose leisure centres, online gaming, extended reality (XR) experiences, social media, and adventure tourism, as well as a greater focus on sustainable development. Global frameworks such as Article 24: Right to Rest and Leisure in the United Nation&#39;s Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are leveraged for you to explore opportunities to increase access to leisure participation by everyone. This subject introduces you to leisure industry components such as recreation, sport, entertainment, events, the arts, and tourism to enable you to examine how businesses, governments, and communities may leverage sustainable opportunities that arise with changes in leisure participation and society. This subject enables you to learn through practice via authentic opportunity-based and problem-based learning experiences applying tools such as Asset Mapping, Appreciative Inquiry, and reflective practice.

This subject investigates events of varying scale, and identifies their contribution as a potential key driver of growth and economic development of businesses, cities and communities. It analyses the social, cultural and environmental impacts of events on destinations and communities. It also examines the relevance, value and appropriateness of events. Activities will support analysing types of events, venues, themes, target markets, relevance to communities and how events contribute to the mixed economy. You will examine approaches to conceptualising an event of relevance for a specific audience, prepare a simulated event bid, engage in group presentations, and complete an observation of an event to analyse its design components. These activities and tasks will provide you with opportunities to identify key skills and how you may apply this learning in the future to event design.This subject introduces learning through practice by exposing you to authentic learning experiences. These experiences are placed at the centre of learning and assessment, so you have the opportunity to develop the skills, knowledge and behaviours necessary to respond to industry, community and/or global needs. You will be introduced to:- a range of methods, tools, techniques and approaches to practice- principles and perspectives such as values, ethics, empathy and leadership in real world scenarios- reflection and deliberative thinking as a means of developing knowledge, skills, attitudes and aspirations- ways of understanding problems and developing solutions through active inquiry.

Tasmania has a growing reputation as a gourmet paradise, with high quality primary products and a growing fermented food and drink industry. In this subject, students will learn about the full production life cycle for fermented food and drink, from raw materials and fermentation basics, through to the packaging, labelling, distribution and marketing of final products. Development of more fermentation businesses in Tasmania may offer an alternative to current problems of an economy reliant on extraction, high agricultural food waste, and over-reliance on State-based employment.While staff from the Tasmanian Institute of Agriculture drive this subject, expert input and content has been sourced across a range of fermentation industries, so students will have access to a diverse range of online materials. Assessment is 100% internal (i.e., no exam) and structured to encourage you to actively engage with ideas and issues and learn collaboratively with and through your peers.

Human activity has altered fifty percent of the Earth&#39;s surface, leading to various consequences, both positive and negative, on our landscapes. However, the opportunities to explore, conserve, and appreciate pristine and exposed landscapes are growing, giving rise to the fields of geoconservation and geotourism. This unique subject explores strategies for investigating, understanding, and addressing issues related to geoconservation and geotourism. Through a series of field-based, and problem-based learning experiences, you will acquire the skills and knowledge necessary to create and manage (geo)heritage inventories, evaluate potential sites for geotourism and geoeducational purposes, design new geotouristic experiences, and develop materials for both consumers and operators in the fields of geoconservation and geotourism.Our program is the only one of its kind in Australia, allowing you to work on real-world case studies and collaborate with leaders in these fields. We look at all forms of Geodiversity - waterways, soils, mountains, fossils, volcanoes and more. Imagine a world where rocks are not just &#39;rock and roll,&#39; but the rockstars of Earth&#39;s history, and geoheritage is our backstage pass to study and conserve their epic stories! Join us as we provide guidance on how to recognise and nominate sites for conservation, restore degraded lands, create trails and geotouristic experiences and explore UNESCO Geoparks whilst utilising cutting-edge digital technologies, conducting social and scientific research, and fostering close relationships with industries and protected area groups. Absolutely no background knowledge is required to undertake this subject, and all are welcome. All techniques and experiences will be provided to you within the subject. This subject provides students with opportunities to undertake over 50 hours of in-field training for students wanting to travel to Tasmania, or exiting online professional training if you live elsewhere in the world.

Tasmania and Australia are rich in history and heritage. What gets presented and celebrated however is contested and challenged. This subject does not only introduce a critical reading of heritage, it offers tools and frameworks for participants to reflect and be cognisant of the challenges of presenting the past, and address difficult challenges in offering heritage to the community and to tourists. Being sensitive and balanced is necessary but what that means is contested. By addressing difficult issues, this subject provides guidance on how to create, formulate and mediate exciting and meaningful heritage experiences.

Critical and Contested Issues in Cultural Heritage

Tourism is part of globalisation. Tourism has changed over the decades as travels become cheaper, new destinations are found and more countries become prosperous. Tourism affects host societies and the issues are often global in scale. These include challenges from climate change, over-tourism and terrorism. On the other hand, tourism offers new social economic opportunities as the world becomes “smaller” and more welcoming. This subject addresses established and emerging global issues in tourism. To emphasise the global dimension of the issues, you will engage with internationally renowned scholars from around the world.

Global Issues in Tourism

This subject will explore the origins, elements and tensions inherent in sustainable tourism. You will explore the relevance of sustainable development to tourism, its application and the tensions that arise when theory is applied to practice. The subject will also critically review and asses international, national and statewide approaches to the concept, its use within government policy and efforts to develop indicators, benchmarks and assessment tools for sustainable tourism. Taught partially within a World Heritage Area, this subject give students a real life understanding of the managerial take up of the concept, along with commercial and tourists’ responses to the concept.The subject is taught face to face from the Cradle Coast and at Cradle Mountain National Park campus in an intensive block mode, over 4 days. Attendance is compulsory. On the 2nd and 3rd day of the teaching block, you will take a field trip to Cradle Mountain National Park (staying overnight), returning to class on the 4th and final day. Following the intensive block teaching, you will complete your assignments online.

Sustainable Tourism Development

This subject will enable students to understand how tourism and cultural industries have dramatically changed our lives. Cultural industries have grown significantly, with examples such as museums, regional festivals and wilderness adventures. At the same time there is an increasing capacity for travel and an increasing need to replace income earned from traditional industries with those from tourism. Different societies are now not only in greater contact with each other but also relating to each other in new ways, as well as benefitting from the growth of cultural capacity in their own localities. The subject will cover three related areas: <ul><li>The first situates the creative economy in the various social, economic and political contexts around the world. Creative cultural industries have become crucial to the life of major cities, regional economies and remote areas. </li><li>The second area that is explored relates to the way in which creative and cultural industries have expanded through travel, international access and changes in the way cities, history, nature, culture, music, food, and art develop into new forms of experiences. </li><li>The third area that is explored relates to creative and cultural case studies. You will also learn about options for communicating research and knowledge transfer, the collection and collation of literature and background research.</li></ul>

Tourism, Creativity and Culture

In Tasmania, our vibrant arts and cultural calendar includes MOFO and Dark MOFO, Ten Days on the Island, and Beaker Street. In this subject, you will learn about the role of festivals, open days, street fairs and other events in contemporary civic life and how they contribute to the culture and economy of towns and cities around the world. From concept to producing a fully-costed proposal, you will develop a detailed understanding of the professional activities required to plan and execute an event, including budgeting, programming and promotion. This subject includes a non-compulsory field trip.
