This degree is designed to provide students with basic skills and knowledge in a range of disciplinary studies in the humanities, arts and social sciences. The Diploma in Arts examines historic, environmental, social, behavioural and cultural features of humanity, allowing students to analyse, reflect upon and anticipate patterns of human conduct. Students will develop creative, critical and analytical skills to assist with future employment or to pursue further study.

Since ancient times, magic and religion have shared a common belief in the supernatural and other-worldly encounters; yet their histories tell a story of acrimony and dissent.This unit investigates how magic and the supernatural have been accepted, understood and practised in a range of historical and social contexts.You will explore such themes as natural, ritual and demonic magic, necromancy, spirits, mediums and séances, fictional wizards and enchantment.Underpinning the study will be an examination of the nature and use of magic and its relation to religion, religious ideologies, science and entertainment.

Magic and the Supernatural in History and Culture

Many states begin with a story. Those of the ancient Mediterranean and Near East had narratives featuring gods, heroes, monsters and magic to explain their origins.You will have the opportunity to explore via literature, art, and artefacts, a wide range of ancient narratives, such as the foundation myths of Greece, Rome, and the Near East - including Nimrod’s Babylonian tower, Theseus and the foundation of Athens, and the twins, Romulus and Remus, raised by a wolf.Through digital storytelling, podcasts, and interactive workshops this subject builds your knowledge and passion for the ancient world.As you compare foundation myths from the different states and cultures that bordered the Mediterranean, you will also critically examine and practise the skills that underpin Classics and Ancient History.Learn from UNE’s internationally regarded academics in classics and ancient history. Of Gods, Heroes and Monsters: Foundation Myths of Antiquity

This subject provides you with a well-rounded exploration of Ancient Rome, from its rise to power on the international stage to the death of Julius Caesar in 44 BC. Emphasis is placed on the literary and material evidence that survives for this period, and the analytical skills historians use to interpret that evidence. You will gain insights into the significant issues of Roman Republican history and deepen your understanding and interpretation of human behaviour in a historically different context. Additionally, you will develop your basic research skills and your ability to apply critical analysis to ancient evidence.

This subject explores the development of European music, c.1750-c.1914. You will examine Western musical forms within their aesthetic, cultural and technological contexts. You will progress through listening and analysis of European orchestral and vocal genres including the sonata, the symphony, the concerto, opera, lied, mélodie and sacred music. As well as providing a general overview, studies in this subject will concentrate on recent trends in the research and performance of the music from this timeframe and examine how approaches to this earlier music and culture are conditioned by more recent social and cultural values.

Music in the Age of Empires and Nations

This subject was previously known as Medieval and Early Modern Music.This subject introduces you to European musical traditions and developments of the Middle Ages and Early Modern period, c. 1000-c.1750. A range of musical genres and styles will be explored through active listening and score analysis, while European culture and society will be studied through scholarly literary sources. There are particular focuses on the development of musical theory, notation, composition, performance practice, the printing press and musical instruments. You will gain knowledge of early music notations through active engagement with primary sources. Studies in this unit concentrate on recent trends in the research and performance of medieval and early modern music.

Early European Music

Western popular music has developed alongside social movements and youth cultures which have challenged the political order and been used to assert new modes of identity. In this subject you will work through an historical survey of Western popular music from the 1950s to the present day, paying particular attention to how popular music genres have developed within shifting social upheavals, technological innovations, and evolving consumer cultures. You will progress through listening, contextualisation and analysis exercises of popular music genres including rock, pop, folk, hip hop, dance and electronica. Subject learning activities will encourage you to evaluate how popular music has challenged historical music literacies and expanded experiences of music of the last and present century.

The Italian Renaissance is a pivotal period in human history, characterised by a resurgence of interest in classical learning, artistic innovation, and cultural flourishing. In this subject you will explore the intellectual developments and the unprecedented advances in the fields of art, architecture, science, literature and technology during this period.This subject takes an interdisciplinary approach, teaching you to analyse literary texts in translation, documentary sources, and visual and material culture outputs. While you develop foundational knowledge about the Italian Renaissance and its legacy throughout time, you&#39;ll have the opportunity to develop a topic of interest using a wide range of mediums.This subject is taught bilingually; if you are majoring in Italian you can continue to develop your language skills, and if you have no knowledge of Italian language but a passion for Italian history, culture and art, you can study and complete assessments in English.

Introduction to the Italian Renaissance

This subject provides you with an opportunity to examine the experiences of Aboriginal people from Cook to the Reconciliation Movement.  You will look at a wide range of topics such as first contacts, dispossession and disempowerment, policies of dispersal, segregation and forced assimilation, Aboriginal resistance, the development of Aboriginal political activism and the Aboriginal struggle for land rights and political and cultural recognition.

Aboriginal History Since the Late 18th Century

This subject examines the development of our attitudes and approaches to law and order through a study of some of the most infamous crimes and criminals in the British world between 1700 and 1900. You will consider a series of case studies ranging broadly over space and time, from both historical and criminological perspectives. This will reveal both changing patterns of deviance and criminal behaviour and the evolving efforts to regulate and prevent it. As such, you will learn how to find, use and evaluate evidence about crime and use it to deepen your understanding of the development of modern society.

Being Bad: Sinners, Crooks, Deviants and Psychos

This subject introduces you to a variety of events and issues which have influenced the lives of Australians during the 20th and into the 21st centuries, as well as the continuing historiographical debates which surround them. It also introduces you to the variety of sources and methods used to study modern Australian history. Through case studies and detailed source analysis, you will learn about a range of topics including the modern family, Australians at war, immigration, political life, leisure and pleasure, depressions and recessions, and popular culture. This subject complements the knowledge gained in HIST150 but can also be studied as a standalone subject.
