Since ancient times, magic and religion have shared a common belief in the supernatural and other-worldly encounters; yet their histories tell a story of acrimony and dissent.This unit investigates how magic and the supernatural have been accepted, understood and practised in a range of historical and social contexts.You will explore such themes as natural, ritual and demonic magic, necromancy, spirits, mediums and séances, fictional wizards and enchantment.Underpinning the study will be an examination of the nature and use of magic and its relation to religion, religious ideologies, science and entertainment.

Magic and the Supernatural in History and Culture

The environment and environmental crises have had a profound impact on the history of the Australian people and their politics. This subject traces the relationship between people and the environment in Australia from pre-European times to the present-day climate-change crisis. We consider the ways in which Australians have sought to manage, tame and develop the natural environment. We measure the costs of hubris, the lack of ecological humility, and failures in recognising nature’s limits. The subject also considers Australia’s response to environmental issues in its region, where it has oscillated between being a trusted regional partner and crisis responder, to an ecological delinquent. Environmental Crisis in Australia and its Region

This subject consists of a comparative history of the Pacific War, considering Japanese, Australian and American perspectives and the war in its political, social, cultural and military aspects. Topics include the role of the Japanese emperor, the debate over the Pearl Harbor attack, the experience of Australian prisoners-of-war, Japanese wartime civilian experience, the internment of Japanese civilians in Australia and the USA, the importance to all sides of concepts of race, the naval war and kamikaze pilots.Please Note: All students studying at Murdoch University will need to complete the compulsory unit, Murdoch Academic Passport (MAP100), which only takes 2-3 hours to complete online. Soldiers and Civilians: War in the Pacific 1941-1945

The Second World War in Europe demonstrated an unprecedented capacity to mobilise huge numbers of people and to wreak massive damage in the cause of ‘military necessity’. The warring regimes offered inspiring visions of the future in efforts to engage whole populations in military and political offensives. The Second World War in Europe

England under the Tudors was a period of treachery, political intrigue and religious conflict—the effect of which transformed the face of Europe and rebounded through history. Under the reigns of Henry VIII and his daughters, Mary I and Elizabeth I, the Reformation sundered the religious and political unity of Europe, the feudal king was supplanted by a &#39;divine&#39; monarch, and England rose as a world power. England’s security in the same period was shaped by complex international relations, including notable contests with Scotland, France and Spain, the long reach of the Holy Roman Emperor, and the enduring strategic and religious influence of the Pope. Though literature and the arts flourished at home in the Tudor age, giving rise to the works of Shakespeare, Spenser, Donne and Holbein, it was also a period of intense social conflict in which ‘witches’ were hanged and religious dissidents were burned at the stake. In this subject students explore the allies, enemies and impacts of the Tudor monarchs to understand the extraordinary experiences of the English Renaissance.Please Note: All students studying at Murdoch University will need to complete the compulsory unit, Murdoch Academic Passport (MAP100), which only takes 2-3 hours to complete online. The Tudors: Treachery, Politics and Faith in the Age of the Renaissance

The study of the past is constantly evolving and this unit sets out to introduce students to the changing nature of the study of antiquity and the on-going significance of the past in the modern world. This unit also introduces students to the study of primary sources, or evidence from Greek and Roman world, and the evaluation of how history is written through an analysis of a specific historical area. The first section of the unit is focused on the study of ancient sources - what is our evidence and how did authors millennia ago write about major world events - pandemics, war, politics, and so on that continue to be a focus for us today. This section of the unit will give you a thorough understanding of the issues around the use of evidence in Ancient History.The second section of the unit focuses on the writing of ancient history in the modern world. You will study a developing area of recent research and critically evaluate how this research is created, its limitations and its strengths, and its significance for those living in the modern world.The third section introduces students to recent research on the failure of the Roman Republic in the second century BCE with a view to better understanding how a political system can simply cease to function and to understand the relevance of this historical phenomenon for the 21st century.

Explore how universities in today’s modern world research and make meaning of the past. You’ll review evidence of major events in Greek and Roman history. And with a critical eye, you’ll evaluate ancient sources against current principles and processes.

In 1215 CE, a Mongol army led by Genghis Khan conquered the Chinese city of Zongdhu (present-day Beijing), creating the basis for the largest contiguous land empire in human history. That same year, leaders of the Latin Church met for the Fourth Lateran Council in Rome at the other end of Eurasia, establishing western European Christian doctrine for the next three centuries. These civilizations soon came into contact as the Mongol Empire enabled commerce and cultural exchange between east and west Eurasia. This unit explores how the increasingly complex network of connections that linked Europe and the wider world between the High Middle Ages and the eve of the modern era helped to create the particular society and culture that we today frequently refer to as “the West.” We focus on the historical contingency of this creation and the ways in which both European and non-European influences and factors forged the idea of the West. From medieval encounters between Christianity and Islam to eighteenth-century encounters between Pacific Islanders and Europeans, from the thirteenth-century Eurasian economic world system to the truly global economy that emerged after 1500, from the horseback empire of the Mongols to the martime empires built by European states, we explore the transformation of the premodern world. The unit considers these processes from both European and non-European perspectives.

Forging the West: A World History of Europe, 1215-1788

Every week students will be introduced to a number of myths from ancient Greece, Rome, the ancient Near East (including Egypt), and some myths from the Aboriginal traditions. You will study the earliest creation myths, explore the stories of gods and goddesses, heroes and monsters, in ancient literature and art. The myths, studied in translation, will be analysed in terms of their cultural context, the genre in which they belong, their typology and as the semester progresses through certain theoretical perspectives.

Reveal how the politics and cultural life of ancient civilisations are reflected in their mythology. Meet figures from Greek, Roman and Near-Eastern mythology. Study Egyptian and biblical texts. Look for examples of myths in literature and art.

Many states begin with a story. Those of the ancient Mediterranean and Near East had narratives featuring gods, heroes, monsters and magic to explain their origins.You will have the opportunity to explore via literature, art, and artefacts, a wide range of ancient narratives, such as the foundation myths of Greece, Rome, and the Near East - including Nimrod’s Babylonian tower, Theseus and the foundation of Athens, and the twins, Romulus and Remus, raised by a wolf.Through digital storytelling, podcasts, and interactive workshops this subject builds your knowledge and passion for the ancient world.As you compare foundation myths from the different states and cultures that bordered the Mediterranean, you will also critically examine and practise the skills that underpin Classics and Ancient History.Learn from UNE’s internationally regarded academics in classics and ancient history. Of Gods, Heroes and Monsters: Foundation Myths of Antiquity

This unit studies major rebellions in world history in their different social and political contexts. We will address both traditional and modern rebellions. Among times and places studied are: ancient Rome; medieval Europe; eighteenth and nineteenth century China, Haiti and the United States; twentieth century Algeria and India; and the 1968 generation. Rebellions could spring from desperate poverty, oppression, the ambitions of a charismatic leader, religious and cultural ideas, or combinations of all of these factors.
