This subject provides an introduction and exploration of the main principles of physical geography applied to urban, rural and regional environments. A range of topics are examined in relation to both natural and human environmental processes. The subject recognises and appreciates diverse indigenous knowledges of physical landscapes. A strong fieldwork component provides opportunities for problem-based learning in professions that require a broad understanding of physical geography, such as education, rural and urban Landcare, environmental planning and geotourism. Map the physical geography of the planet as it relates to urban, rural and regional environments. Unearth tectonic plates and river systems. Look up to the sky and study weather patterns. Highlight the issues that affect sustainability planning.

Most Australians live in the suburbs of the metropolitan cities yet most of the wealth created and the national myths originate in the rural regions. In this subject we will offer a critical, historical and comparative overview of the development of Australian cities and their regions into the twenty-first century. The core case study of metropolitan Melbourne and regional Victoria is exemplary of the issues, themes and challenges facing all Australian cities and regions today. Field visits to metropolitan and regional locations, during multi-day field trips, will allow this exploration. Some modest travel and overnight accommodation costs will be required from students. The role of a large metropolis as a globally connected centre contrasts with the peripheral location of the production of resources and cultural imaginings, yet the paths of these locations have diverged. Resource management, cultural and economic development, liveability and sustainability, increased mobility, and heritage and technological innovations are bringing these regions back together. Attendance at field trips is compulsory.This is a level 2 subject.

Rural Geographies

Urban Geographies

This subject was previously known as Places Landscapes Regions.This subject uses the concept of cultural landscapes, and the related concepts of place and territory, to understand and analyse the character and pressures on environments. The subject will equip students to understand, explain and apply geographical analysis to contemporary issues at different spatial scales. These issues include climate change, urbanisation, land use, human-nature relations, and ecological degradation. This subject is concerned with the mobility of human life and the contemporary and historical processes of migration. Drawing on findings from human geography, demography and political geography, the subject will encompass: the history of migration, spatial patterns of migration in Australia, settler colonial migration, international migration, the globalisation of labour markets, the complex ethical, economic and security concerns emanating from migration, skilled migration, population ageing, and rural to urban (and urban to rural) migration. People have been relocating for centuries. So what are the patterns? And how does this affect us all? Study migration across Australia and the world – including rural to urban, and urban to rural. Consider ethical, economic and security impacts. 

Geographies of Migration

This subject was previously known as GPH11 Introduction to Human Geography.This subject provides an introduction to human geography at the local-global scale focussing on the key concepts of place; space and globalisation. Human Geography

Throughout history, maps have been fundamental in shaping our view of the world and articulating our place in it, at local and regional scales. Maps guide us in everyday tasks but can also be a means to get global overviews on current topics. Today, as in the past, geo-spatial information is a valuable commodity, harnessed by researchers, governments, business and the public. But maps are not purely scientific objects; they are inherently ideological and subjective, communicating the beliefs, power structures and aspirations of particular times, people and places. This subject introduces concepts and perceptions of geographical space and relationships in different cultures, past and present.

Mapping, Analysing and Visualising Data

Australia is being influenced by far-reaching economic, demographic and social processes, many of which originate elsewhere in the globe.  In this subject you will explore the ways in which Australian urban and rural regions are being impacted by these global dynamics but also how rural and urban communities are interpreting and influencing these changes.  This subject investigates some of the most important issues currently confronting Australian society: the population/ecological (im)balance; the ongoing restructuring of key Australian industries such as mining, manufacturing and agriculture; the declining fortunes of country towns; and the social, economic and ecological issues facing Australian cities.  You will develop an understanding of the core concepts, techniques and practices of human geography through the unit&#39;s exploration of how &#39;real&#39; urban and rural places are made.

Where in the World? Australia's Human Geography

Antarctica and the Southern Ocean – valued, protected, understood. This mantra was coined originally by the Australian Antarctic Division (the government department with responsibility for Australian activities in the Antarctic) and was also adopted, with modification, by Antarctica New Zealand (New Zealand’s government department). It reflects the vision of these two countries, and the ideological approach they have to their interests in the Antarctic. It is simple, descriptive and informative. It is what this subject is all about. “Protecting Antarctica” integrates the natural and social sciences to give context to contemporary Antarctic environmental issues. Its objective is to provide a comprehensive, multidisciplinary review of the management and regulation of uses of the continent and surrounding marine environment of the Southern Ocean from the point of view of protecting the natural environment and its values. It includes a series of lectures on geography and environmental sciences, physical sciences, biological sciences, social sciences and humanities. “Protecting Antarctica” incorporates the theme of multiple use management of a globally important region, wherein management involves commercial marine living resource extraction, scientific research, logistics, and tourism and other non-extractive commercial activities. Antarctica and the Southern Ocean are subject to a unique legal regime including an environmental protocol to the 1959 Antarctic Treaty, and this instrument has become the basis upon which all human activity in Antarctica is judged. Completing the subject will equip students from a wide variety of fields with the ability to view the Antarctic from a more holistic perspective. Your new knowledge will assist you to understand the various values of the region, how they – and the areas they apply to – become known, then valued, then protected.
