This subject formulates the procedures related to digital forensic and investigation in a computer and a networking scenario. Students critically appraise the key concepts associated with the data hiding, evidence collection and validation and traffic analysis required to perform forensic analysis in a digital environment. This subject introduces students to the criminal justice process using the crime of homicide. Starting with a focus on the key elements of the crime event, including the current state of homicide in Australia and abroad, students will develop an understanding of serious violent offences through the lens of offenders and victims of violence. Students then learn how the criminal justice system responds to serious violence offences through an examination of the interconnectedness of the police, courts, and correctional agencies. Students will learn how serious violent offences are detected and investigated by the police and move on to an understanding of how these offences are processed in the courts, which includes the criminal trial and sentencing. Students review the various forms of custodial sentencing and will be introduced to concepts of rehabilitation and desistance. Throughout the subject students review the ways that criminological theory has informed the crime of homicide, as well as the criminal justice system and social responses to homicide.

Focus on the key elements of a crime event through the lens of offenders and victims of violence. Learn how serious violent offences are detected and investigated, then consider how these offences are processed in the courts, via trials and sentencing.

This subject was previously known as Forensic Criminology.Forensic science techniques are critical to criminal investigations as they can identify suspects in crimes and also make educated decisions about how and when a crime has occurred. In this unit you will examine how forensic evidence is applied to the criminal justice system. Using the theme of &#39;forensic identification&#39; classes explore a variety of forensic methods and the difficulties associated with concepts such as methodology, accuracy, confidence, reliability and admissibility. You will study how forensic science functions within the justice system, new challenges to forensic science as it responds to technology, forensic criminology theories and concepts, crime scene processes and recent inquiries into the validity of forensic science itself. You will be exposed to practical forensic applications and case studies pertinent to understanding the strengths and weaknesses of forensic evidence.

Forensic Science within Criminal Justice

Forensic psychology concerns the application of psychology to the understanding and operation of legal and criminal justice systems. Theories and knowledge from a broad range of domains can be applied within forensic contexts. This subject of study demonstrates how knowledge from the domains of biological, cognitive, developmental, social and personality, and mental health psychology have been successfully employed to address forensic questions and issues. Students are presented with an introduction to key areas of forensic psychology and major theories of crime are offered and evaluated. In every society there are acts or omissions that constitute crimes and it is crucial that we understand the nature and consequences of crime. In this introductory subject you will learn about a range of issues, including the problematic nature of defining crime and the impact of the media when it comes to explaining criminal behaviour. You will explore how knowledge of crime is developed and the role of theory in explaining crime. You will also investigate forensic science and the criminal justice system. You will explore different types of crimes that are impacting upon our society, including crimes against morality; cyber, corporate and white-collar crime; violent and property crime; and youth crime.

This subject will provide an introduction to psychology and law. The progression of lecture topics in this subject will roughly follow the course of an investigation and trial of a criminal case, covering issues such as eyewitness memory; false memories; police interviewing techniques; deception detection; and juror decisions. Throughout the subject, the focus will be on how psychological science can (a) help us understand various aspects of the legal system, and (b) help to improve important processes in policing and courtroom trials.

Forensic Psychology

This subject was previously known as CCJ741.Forensic mental health is an area of specialisation that involves the assessment and treatment of client&#39;s who are both mentally disordered and whose behaviour has led to or could possibly lead to offending. Forensic mental health as a field therefore represents the interface between community safety and client centred practice. The two key intervention targets in FMH are mental disorders and problem behaviours. This subject will address the first of these targets by providing students with knowledge of general mental health interventions and components of recovery/recovery processes. Students will also be provided with skills in the delivery of specific intervention strategies targeting the most common mental health presentations in FMH. Students will also be provided with the opportunity to practice the skill of treatment plan development and role play delivery of specific strategies.
