This subject will appeal to any students wishing to explore the impact of trauma in our lives, and especially how this affects our learning. The subject will introduce and highlight key concepts of early adversity, that you may be familiar with from your own prior learning or educational experiences. These concepts will be explored through a lens of resilience and wellbeing. You will be introduced to theories, principles and strategies that will further your understanding of the impact of trauma, and enable you to build resilience, promote wellbeing, and support growth and learning, both for yourself, and others more effectively. You will also explore the importance of self-care to ensure your own sense of wellbeing which is critical for learning and the support of others.

​A Trauma-Informed Approach​ to Resilience and Wellbeing

This subject extends your understanding of the emotional, intellectual, spiritual, interpersonal, social and environmental dimensions of health and wellness. The content focuses on critical aspects of social and emotional learning (SEL) to ensure you can successfully implement a program of SEL in a school or workplace. SEL encompasses concepts such as resilience, mental health, drug education, sexual health, relationships and safety issues. You will develop skills and knowledge to enable you to support the social and emotional wellbeing of your students in your teaching practice.

Social and Emotional Learning

This subject introduces concepts and theories that deepen and broaden your understanding of the professional activity undertaken by education support workers in the classroom. It discusses the practical skills required in work contexts and provides opportunities to critically examine the nature of support for student learning and development. You will develop practical skills in reflection and observation by engaging in tutorials, lectures and on-line activities. This engagement in the activities of the subject will assist you in completing your assessment tasks.

The Role of Education Support

This introductory subject prepares educators from a variety of disciplines to meet the maturational needs of diverse learners by providing a foundational base of knowledge regarding physical and cognitive development from conception through adulthood, with an emphasis on early childhood and childhood. Teaching all children the benefits of lifelong physical activity participation through the use of developmentally appropriate assessment and programming strategies is the primary focus of this subject.

Growth and Motor Development Across the Lifespan

The importance of play is recognised as being integral to young children’s learning and development and is therefore embedded within the Early Years Learning Framework. This subject comprises of three modules, namely: What is play? Play and the Curriculum and Play and the Early Childhood (EC) practitioner. The concept, assessment and integration of play based learning will be investigated through readings, lectures and tutorial activities. This subject is particularly relevant to students specialising in the early years and those seeking an early childhood perspective of pedagogy and children’s learning.

Play, Pedagogy and Learning

This subject provides a range of strategies to cater for students with diverse needs in learning mathematics. The learning needs may include: difficulties directly related to the learning of mathematics, such as dyscalculia; difficulties that are not directly related to mathematics, such as literacy obstacles; or other learning differences, such as those which stem from cultural differences or exceptionality. The range of students also includes those who are gifted in learning mathematics. The subject is based on two justifiable premises: first, that all students are able to engage successfully with an appropriately challenging mathematics curriculum but may do so in different ways; and second, that teachers have a responsibility to provide high quality learning experiences, supported by pedagogical reasoning, to all students.

Inclusive Mathematics

The subject will explore the nature of inclusive education in the 21st Century with an emphasis on diversity and exceptionality. Based on a philosophical foundation that values every student and acknowledges the right of every student to the most appropriate educational opportunities, this subject involves independently researching and analysing the complex theoretical and practical issues associated with effective inclusive education. You will be required to develop an advanced and integrated understanding of learning and teaching approaches to suit the diverse educational needs of students. You will build on your understanding of theories of human development and learning in relation to student diversity and exceptionality, applying planning models to include all students.

Inclusive Practices in Education Settings

Young children develop their abilities to communicate, make meaning, represent ideas, and problem-solve in many ways. Literacy development begins at birth, while mathematical thinking flourishes as they begin to explore their world. In this subject, you will explore the continuity of this learning in the early years of schooling, drawing upon significant theories that underpin this learning. You will examine early literacy and numeracy concepts, processes and pedagogies; and apply this knowledge to develop learning experiences suitable for diverse young learners. You will deepen your understanding about relevant national curricula (the Early Years Learning Framework and the Australian Curriculum); as well as reflect upon your own experiences and growing understandings about literacy and numeracy to plan for vibrant and inclusive learning encounters in Prep to Year Two.

Literacy and Numeracy 5 to 8 years

In this second English subject, you will further the work commenced in language, closely integrating this with the Literacy Strand of the Australian Curriculum: English. The subject has a particular focus on contemporary approaches to the teaching of reading, including close attention to the teaching of phonemic awareness, phonics, word knowledge, and comprehension of a wide range of texts. An emphasis of study will also be on teaching children writing, with a close study of text types and grammar. Throughout the subject there is also a strong focus on the pedagogical imperatives underpinning the English curriculum including explicit teaching, assessing student work and catering for diverse learners. You will learn to apply this knowledge by developing a portfolio of lesson plans in reading and writing across both of the assessment pieces in this subject.

Developing Understandings of English

In this subject you will learn about Music and the Visual Arts as key areas of the Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF) and the Australian Curriculum: The Arts. You will become familiar with the research that supports the practice of the Arts in education and apply this to your planning, teaching and reflection. You will experiment with, reflect on and apply the elements of Music and Visual Arts to Early Childhood and Primary contexts and to key Australian curriculum documents. As a culminating performance of your learning you will plan, teach and reflect on a short Music or Visual Arts teaching session.
