Preparing Carbon Accounts

As a carbon accountant, your choices about reporting frameworks can greatly impact business’ climate strategies and their ability to reduce emissions. With the global climate policy environment in constant flux, it’s crucial that you have a deep understanding of these factors and how they impact climate accounting and business decision-making.This subject is designed to give you the knowledge and skills to navigate this complex landscape confidently. You&#39;ll explore the current and proposed climate reporting frameworks used by reporting entities worldwide and gain a solid understanding of the climate policies in place that make carbon accounting an essential factor in the global push towards a low-carbon economy.

Climate Reporting Frameworks and Policy

Understanding carbon accounting methods is essential for interpreting what organisations communicate through their carbon accounts and climate reports. The Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Protocol is widely recognised as the best practice for carbon accounting, making a thorough understanding of it essential for success in this field. This subject will equip you to stay ahead of the curve in the fast-paced carbon accounting and climate reporting world.In this subject, you’ll gain a robust understanding of the GHG Protocol, including its definitions of organisational boundaries and the three Scopes of emissions (Scope 1, Scope 2 and Scope 3). You&#39;ll also learn how to calculate carbon equivalents and effectively use ‘factors’, building a solid foundation of knowledge essential for critically engaging with the underpinning methods of carbon accounting.Our subject will help you to develop the critical thinking skills to stay agile and informed as a future carbon accountant and industry professional. You&#39;ll learn how to critically engage with contested carbon accounting and climate reporting practices, preparing you to adapt to evolving methods and best practices. This knowledge forms an essential basis for understanding and preparing carbon accounts – a topic we’ll explore further in our ‘Preparing Carbon Accounts’ subject.

Introduction to Carbon Accounting

TAS-BEA121 Economic Policy in Action expands upon the key microeconomic and macroeconomic concepts introduced in TAS-BEA111 Introduction to Markets and the Economy. The first module of the subject focusses on extending the macroeconomics in TAS-BEA111 to consider international trade, exchange rates and the balance of payments. It also examines conventional and unconventional monetary and fiscal macroeconomic policy options to promote economic growth and manage shocks during times of crisis. The second module of the subject focuses on how to measure the economic impact of a new business or entity and its impacts on the well-being of different members of society.The subject extends the range of macroeconomic concepts that can be used to understand national account and balance of payments data; and how to investigate issues using the economic method; and to address issues of real importance to business and economic development and to communicate information in an effective manner.TAS-BEA121 is the second of two foundation level economics subjects offered by the Tasmanian School of Business and Economics. Taken together with TAS-BEA111 Introduction to Markets and the Economy, TAS-BEA121 provides you with a comprehensive introduction to macroeconomic theory and policy and forms a strong foundation if you are planning to continue your study of economics.TAS-BEA121 is a compulsory subject in the Bachelor of Economics (TAS-ECO-DEG) degree. It is also a compulsory subject in all the Economic majors offered by the Tasmanian School of Business and Economics and is a nominated elective in a wide range of other programs throughout the University of Tasmania.

Economic Policy in Action

TAS-BEA111 introduces the key concepts in economics, both microeconomics and macroeconomics. It demonstrates how these concepts can be used to describe and explain the decisions of businesses and individuals and their reactions to world events, social and economic change and government policy. The subject explains why and when markets work and fail. Many of the problems that nations face such as pollution, unemployment, climate change, deflation, inflation, poverty, education and health are market failures. The subject devotes considerable time towards explaining how to develop basic microeconomic and macroeconomic policies for market failures and how to evaluate their welfare consequences for different members of society.

Introduction to Markets and the Economy

Traditional economics portrays decision making as rational deliberation that computes optimal choices based on well-defined objectives and perfect information. In reality, limited information and cognition as well as certain features of the human psychology often result in decisions that deviate from this assumption. Behavioural economics attempts to explain these deviations using insights and theories from the other social sciences, in particular psychology. This subject introduces students to this intersection of economics and psychology. Its aim is not to be mathematically or theoretically thorough. Rather, it focuses on developing a better understanding of how human psychology affects economic decisions and how such knowledge can be applied to real world business and policy issues, including to nudge.

Introduction to Behavioural Economics

This subject examines a range of contemporary economic issues shaping the development of regional and rural areas.  Students will apply economics principles to study regional growth, urbanisation, international trade, migration and development policy. Students will study the complex tradeoffs between regional economic development, social needs and equity concerns.  Students are introduced to a range of quantitative and qualitative techniques that enables them to assess issues in regional development. Special attention will be paid to the contemporary development challenges facing Tasmanian regional development.

Regional Development in a Global Context

In this subject, students are introduced to applying economic principles to agriculture, agribusiness, and related markets. Students will apply economic principles to study issues in food production and food security.  Content will include topics in farm management and organisation, the operation of agricultural markets, managing risk and the economics of government intervention in food and agricultural markets. The role of soil stewardship, farm diversification and farming in multifunctional landscapes will also be considered.

Agriculture and Food Economics

The objective of this subject is to provide a general understanding of the operation of the maritime industry from an economics perspective. The main focus is on the economic behaviour of shipowners, shippers, and other stakeholders in the markets for liquid bulk, dry bulk, container shipping, shipbuilding, scrapping and second-hand ships.

Maritime Economics

In today&#39;s rapidly changing world, the ability to make informed decisions about the future is more important than ever, and this subject offers students the essential knowledge and techniques to make informative forecasts and to succeed in decision-making activities in economics, business, government, and many other fields. Throughout the subject, students will learn various reliable forecasting techniques, including the decomposition of time series, exponential smoothing methods, ARIMA modelling and forecast combinations. These methods will be applied to real-world economic data, providing students with practical experience in analysing and interpreting economic trends. In addition to technical skills, the subject will also cover key theoretical concepts and principles that underlie forecasting. These include an understanding of successful forecasts, and the limitations and uncertainties of forecasting. This subject is particularly relevant for students in economics, finance, business, and related fields who are interested in pursuing careers in analysing data, forecasting, consulting, strategic planning, or policy making.
