Healthcare delivery is constantly evolving in the face of population growth, our increasingly diverse and aging communities, changing approaches to delivering healthcare and availability of new technology. Health professionals need to be more collaborative, team-focussed and adaptable than ever before. To meet these challenges, the University of Tasmania, in partnership with major health providers, is launching a more flexible and agile approach to providing educational offerings for health professionals throughout their careers.The Graduate Diploma of Advanced Practice (Specialisation) is designed to provide you with the knowledge and skills to expand your contribution to healthcare and meet your continuing professional development requirements with a flexible online approach. The program has been developed with health industry partners and features a strong inter-disciplinary approach, drawing on content from a broad range of disciplines across the University of Tasmania, with an emphasis on providing you with the flexibility to choose content that best progresses your career ambitions.You will build a strong foundation in leadership skills and critical thinking, helping you to analyse and resolve the complex problems that you face in the health system. You can then choose from a curated selection of subjects expanding your knowledge in fields including epidemiology, public health, biostatistics, health service innovation, health informatics and digital health.The program is open to anyone with a health-related bachelor degree, or a bachelor degree in an unrelated area with at least two years&#39; experience in the health workforce. If you already have a health-related Graduate Certificate, you may be eligible for advanced standing into the course to enable you to progress directly to the specialisation component of the degree.Advanced Practice specialisations are designed to develop graduates who can demonstrate leadership and perform independently in the healthcare system. Each specialisation provides the knowledge and skills for students to make evidence informed decisions in their chosen area to meet industry needs and workforce demands.The Health Economics specialisation will develop your understanding of contemporary economic principles and how they inform healthcare policy decision-making. The challenge posed to human health by climate change and other encroaching planetary boundaries is considerable, and there is growing pressure for healthcare systems to take action to reduce their environmental impact. The economic and fiscal shock caused by COVID-19 provides further impetus to closely examine the sustainability of the existing economic models that underpin our healthcare systems.This specialisation will provide you with a foundation in the theories and models used in economics, financial and managerial accounting in healthcare organisations to explore topical issues in the public and private health sector. You will investigate critical topics and approaches, considering funding models, supply and demand factors, and economic evaluations. Graduate Diploma of Advanced Practice (Health Economics)

This program aims to build the capacity of future leaders in water management. Students will develop the strategic, managerial and technical skills they need to advance in the water sector.The program equips students with practical tools and skills for developing and managing the adoption of innovative solutions to local, regional, national and international water management issues. There is a focus on building skills in critical thinking, problem solving, statistics and data management, knowledge transfer and effective leadership.Students will acquire specialist skills and knowledge associated with their chosen elective courses.The program is managed and led by the <a href="http://watercentre.org/" target="_blank" style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0);">International WaterCentre (IWC)</a>. This subject provides managers with an introduction to a comprehensive range of key microeconomic and macroeconomic topics. The emphasis is on the practical application of basic economic concepts and models to real world business oriented problems. The subject will develop your ability to apply the economic way of thinking to solving problems within a firm understanding of the economic environment in which they operate.

Economics for Managers

This innovative approach to economics focuses on policy implementation for climate action and sustainable development. It moves beyond conventional approaches by reframing economics, accounting and policy within sustainability principles, parameters and processes, so that climate-friendly actions and sustainable behaviours are rewarded, rather than penalised. The focus is on implementation through the re-evaluation of economic activities, the restructuring of accounting narratives, and the used of monitoring and management regimes that support continuous sustainability learning. The subject provides new relevance for many existing methods currently marginalised in conventional policy processes. Students will learn ways of thinking and techniques that utilise new information system technologies. Socio-cultural and biophysical understandings from other sciences are integrated in a range of theoretical and practical perspectives on complex issues that have local and international relevance. The skills developed will enhance the employment prospects for students with organisations that are keen to move beyond business-as-usual to embrace the new world of sustainability-informed accounting, governance, management and policy.

The objective of this subject is to provide a basic understanding of contemporary issues in maritime economics from the managerial perspective. The main focus is on economic relationships and policies concerning ship owners, shippers, policy makers and other stakeholders in the maritime industry.

Maritime Economics for Managers

To effectively manage a business or other organisation, you need to understand the general economic environment in which it operates. In this subject you will explore concepts and principles from Microeconomics and Macroeconomics that will help you to understand the key concepts of management economics. Microeconomics examines how consumers and firms make decisions and how they interact with each other in markets. This includes topics such as supply and demand, consumer and firm behaviour, price determination and the operation of markets, situations of market failure, and the impact and role of government on the economy. Macroeconomics studies the entire economy and its wellbeing. In this component of the subject, you will investigate factors such as inflation, exchange rates, interest rates and trade on the wellbeing and stability of the economy.

Economics for Management

This course is concerned with the nature and significance of economic reasoning. Students are taught to employ economic reasoning to attain a greater understanding of social, business, and leadership topics.

Digital disruptions such as the sharing economy have caused major disruptions for the tourism industry – both positive and negative. Platforms such as Airbnb and Uber, plus Airtasker, UberEats and HomeAway, have transformed the way tourists travel, the way that purchases are made, the way in which employees are hired, the way in which the industry is regulated and ultimately the way in which tourism as an industry is regarded by communities. Further disruptions such as big data have challenged norms of research, the ethics of collecting data and have ultimately challenged our understanding of how the tourism industry works. In this subject, you will tackle these issues by exploring the reasons for the rise of disruptive innovations such as the sharing economy. You will assess positive and negative impacts, from a diverse range of perspectives including those of consumers, tourism operators, the tourism industry and policy makers.

The Sharing Economy and Disruptive Innovations

The purpose of the subject is to build an applied understanding of the psychological biases which influence financial decision-making. The behavioural finance perspective of decision-making is contrasted with more traditional finance perspectives. This enables a unique interpretation of market anomalies and asset pricing bubbles. The applications of the subject are across corporate finance and investment management.

Behavioural Finance

This subject provides you with an introduction to behavioural economics. Behavioural economics is a discipline at the intersection of economics and psychology that draws on insights and methods from the social sciences to understand better how people actually make decisions. The aim of this subject is not to be mathematically or theoretically thorough. Rather, it focuses on developing a better understanding of how human psychology affects our decisions and how such knowledge can be applied to real world business and policy issues, including to the nudge agenda. You will also be exposed to methods of enquiry used in behavioural economics, in particular, economic experiments and randomised controlled trials, their real-world applications and the insights they generate. You will develop knowledge and skills to design and conduct such experiments and trials as well as to evaluate newly designed business strategies, public policies and nudge interventions.

Behavioural Economics

This subject provides managers with an introduction to a comprehensive range of key data analysis, statistics, microeconomic and macroeconomic topics. The emphasis is on the practical application of basic statistical techniques, economic concepts and models to real world business-oriented problems and on developing students’ ability to apply the economic way of thinking to solving problems within a firm understanding of the economic environment in which they operate. The use of mathematics and arithmetical calculations are kept to a minimum for selected topics in statistics by using the Microsoft Excel spreadsheet package.

Statistical and Economic Analysis for Decision Making

This subject examines the theories and frequently used techniques of economics, financial and managerial accounting in healthcare organisations. Public and private funding issues will be examined across the acute, primary and aged care sectors. Students will apply this knowledge to determine cost efficient and effective decision making, taking into account safety, quality, resource considerations and principles of value-based healthcare, in general. Students will investigate critical topics and approaches, including funding models; supply and demand factors; economic evaluations, financial statements and working capital cycle; budgeting approaches and key performance indicators; and long-term investments. Students will have opportunities to hear from experts across Australia and participate in industry relevant studies and analysis.
