This degree is designed for people seeking to attain an Initial Teacher Education qualification in order to register as a teacher in Australia and any other countries that recognise an Australian teaching qualification. Students will develop advanced critical skills, knowledge and understanding concerning best practice in education and in meeting the needs of 21st century learners. Graduates from this degree will be well-placed to enter leadership pathways in their teaching careers. Most subjects in this degree will be offered fully online, in order to provide more flexible access. Students will have four opportunities to engage in professional practice in schools, culminating in a final professional placement of 5 continuous weeks.The Master of Teaching (Early Childhood Education) will be chosen by those who wish to teach in schools in K - 2, or who are seeking educator roles in Early Childhood Education and Care settings. This major encompasses children from birth - 8 years of age, and subjects studied will include management and leadership of Early Childhood Education and Care centres, as well as school curriculum and general pedagogical approaches. Professional experience placements will be completed by all students in this major across the full age range of birth-8 years.Please note that this course is only available to applicants who are residing in Australia for the duration of their degree. As this course doesn’t hold CRICOS registration international students on a Student VISA are not permitted to undertake this course.

This is the first in the suite of three English subjects in the Master of Teaching. The focus of this subject is on an in-depth understanding of what reading entails and the characteristics of the good reader. Theories and practices of reading will be situated in the context of broader perspectives of literacy and language. Students will learn and understand the multiple components of reading to inform the comprehensive identification of children’s skills as readers at various stages of their development. Introduction to English: Reading

This subject will provide an overview of local and international, historical and philosophical perspectives that have influenced contemporary Australian early childhood education and care contexts. Their impact on early childhood education and care and its leadership and management will be critically examined. The subject affords the opportunity to explore and critique policy and procedure development in the light of current legislative and accountability requirements. Philosophy, Management and Leadership in Early Childhood Education and Care

This subject examines early literacy theories and perspectives, with an emphasis on play-based pedagogies, research approaches and documentation of young children’s literacy learning. Students will develop understandings of the experiences and perspectives of families and the relationship between home literacy practices and early literacy learning. Early Literacies and Play-Based Pedagogies

This subject is the second in the suite of professional experience subjects and includes both a theory and a practical component (a placement in a school). It is also the second in the suite of three English subjects. The subject covers writer identity and theories and practices of writing to provide foundational understandings for planning, assessment and reporting. Scaffolded by the placement, the subject explores theories, pedagogical practices and effective planning related to teaching English to support all learners. Specific attention is given to lesson planning in educational settings for 3, 4 and 5 year-olds, which includes selecting objectives, resources and strategies for teaching, learning and assessment in diverse contexts. The professional experience practical assessment is a three-week full-time block placement intended to enable practical application of the knowledge and skills gained along with providing further insights into the complexity of an Early Childhood Educator’s role. All required clearances to work with children must be obtained and valid, and all other professional experience requirements met. Early Childhood Professional Experience 2: Planning for Writing, Assessment and Reporting

This subject prepares Early Childhood Educators to design and implement authentic arts education programs in Early Childhood Education and Care settings. Play-based learning principles will be applied to this design process and experiences will be developmentally appropriate. Creative and Media Arts in Early Childhood

This subject will examine the humanities and social sciences and science curricula through an inquiry-based learning approach. A major focus of the humanities and social sciences learning area is on the ways in which children investigate and develop knowledge of their families, local area and sustainability practices. A major focus of the science learning area is to develop scientific knowledge in relation to biological, chemical, earth and space, and physical sciences. Humanities and Science in Early Childhood

This subject explores contemporary issues of culture, equity, values, and social justice in early childhood pedagogy. Historical and contemporary images of childhood, and their relationship to images of teaching, are examined. Diverse family and community contexts are investigated, with a focus on promoting early childhood settings and services as democratic forums that are welcoming to and respectful of all cultures and beliefs. Children’s rights perspective is emphasised, and anti-bias approaches are analysed with a view towards enhancing reconciliation between diverse cultures and communities. Family and Community Contexts

This subject is designed to develop an understanding of mathematics in daily life for children aged birth to four years. There is a focus on the ways young children develop early mathematical concepts in a variety of learning contexts including home, community, early education, care and school settings. Assess the best ways to introduce numerical concepts to the very young. Consider the variety of learning environments that children find themselves in, such as the home, care settings and the community. Learn to work in tandem with family members.

Numeracy for Birth to 4 Year-Olds

This subject will enable pre-service educators to develop a sound understanding of the importance of supporting the physical, social and emotional health and wellbeing of young children for their development and learning. The subject explores the characteristics of children&#39;s physical development and motor coordination. Health, Safety and Physical Education in Early Childhood

This is the first in the suite of professional experience subjects and includes both a theory and a practical component (a placement in an Early Learning and Care setting). It will critically examine the principles and practices to plan and implement appropriate learning experiences for children in Early Learning and Care settings. The subject will focus on exploring intentional teaching and child-centred approaches to teaching and learning during a professional experience placement. Pre-service teachers will be introduced to the importance of developing teacher resilience. Relevant national and local policies and frameworks will be scrutinised. The professional experience practical assessment is five distributed days plus a two-week full-time block placement intended to enable practical application of the knowledge and skills gained, along with providing students with insights into the complexity of the educator’s role. All required clearances to work with children must be obtained and valid, and all other professional experience requirements met.
