If you’re an early childhood educator, La Trobe&#39;s Bachelor of Early Childhood Education allows you to upgrade your qualification and take the next step in your career. Enjoy flexible learning that&#39;s designed to fit around your work and personal commitments. The Bachelor of Early Childhood Education is delivered entirely online, using virtual classrooms and meeting spaces; video and webinars; online learning modules and mobile learning apps.This four-year degree includes 180 credit points of advanced standing for the Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care, as well as relevant work experience. You’ll complete a further 300 credit points to gain the Bachelor’s qualification.Build your skills and experience through supervised work-based learning (WBL) placements. This subject explores the features of child language and how children acquire language. From infancy to primary schooling years, it examines the development of specific linguistic features and also the cognitive processes behind language acquisition. The focus is not just on first language acquisition but also considers the acquisition of additional languages and children who are multilingual from a very early age. This subject will be a useful introduction to the topic for those who are generally interested, thinking about their own child(ren)&#39;s development or planning to work with children.

Child Language Development

In this subject pre-service teachers will examine a broad range of leadership styles and management roles in an early childhood context and recognise their own goals for leadership and management, identifying what success will mean in their future professional and personal lives. They will also investigate the issues that shape early childhood leadership such as: policy, legal requirements, political influences, professional ethics and operational management. Additionally, Pre-service teachers will examine advocacy through leadership research and practice and consider ways to advocate for professional and community awareness of the importance of early childhood education.

Leadership and Management in Early Childhood Education

Students will explore language and multiple literacies in Early Education; strategies for teaching and learning of reading, writing, speaking, listening and viewing in the early years and for supporting culturally and linguistically diverse families and ESL children; inclusive practices and diverse abilities in language and multiple literacies; documenting children&#39;s learning of language and and investigating how children communicate their ideas.

Language, Literacies and Communication

In this subject you will investigate and analyse current research and policy in digital learning, literacy and mathematics including multi-literacies and multimodal resources, with the aim of engaging children and enhancing literacy, mathematical and digital learning in the early years. Relevant research and curriculum documents are used to examine mathematics, literacy and digital curriculum content and identify pedagogical practices which engage children in learning. You will research, plan and analyse inquiry based methodologies as a tool for differentiating the learning activities and assessment opportunities for children with individual learning styles.

Multimodal Literacies and Mathematics

Children may experience a range of learning difficulties that will interfere with learning. In this subject students explore strategies to identify and reduce the impact of learning challenges in early childhood contexts.

Learning Difficulties And Abilities

Students in this subject investigate the notion that unstructured play outdoors (nature play) is fundamental to a healthy childhood in that it provides benefits for health, cognitive, social and emotional development and helps to build resilience and creativity. Students also address the proposition that experience in nature as a child may lead to environmental sensitivity and responsibility later in life. Students design effective outdoor settings for children&#39;s nature play and manage aspects of safety while maximising exploration and free play. Students identify and document the learning that emerges from outdoor and nature play.

Outdoor and Nature Play

This subject provides a global view of early childhood curriculum theories and pedagogical practices. You will learn to create and critically analyse curriculum using theoretical perspectives to further understand ways in which curriculum is connected to pedagogy, play, learning and assessment.

Early Childhood Curriculum

In this subject students complete a culminating placement in their focus area. The practicum associated with this subject is a work-based experience in a supervised capacity. This subject enables you to participate in an authentic program with an emphasis on applied learning. You are required to undertake Professional experience of 20 days.

Work-Based Learning

In this subject you will design, implement and report on a small scale teacher research project that is aimed at enhancing practice. You will engage in critical reflection and analysis of how educational research can enhance professional practice.

Teacher as Researcher 2: Research Project

In this subject you will explore and assess approaches to educational research including teacher inquiry to assist in identifying a research topic and undertaking a literature review. You will analyse aspects of and issues connected to educational research in preparation for a research project to be undertaken in EDU4TR2 Teachers as Researchers 2.
