Case Management for Consumer Directed Care in Disability and Aged Care

You will develop the ability to critically analyse approaches to Case Management in the human services areas of Disability and Aged Care. You will develop advanced knowledge of the definitions, theories, characteristics and processes of case management, the influences on its historical development and practicemodels and critical issues and ethical dilemmas in case management. You will use cognitive and analytic skills to develop their understanding of professional practice, the process of case management and the difference between case management and other service delivery approaches. Support services, both mainstream and specialised, are adopting contemporary disability practices to enable self-determination, choice and control by people with disability. This subject examines the evolution of disability practice with particular emphasis on the reforms arising from the Disability Royal Commission and the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS). Using a rights-based framework, you will explore themes of participation and inclusion and develop professional skills in effective communication, advocacy, support coordination and capacity building.

This subject was previously known as Imagining Health in Social and Cultural Contexts.An introduction to sociological and anthropological perspectives on health, wellbeing illness and disability in society; understanding the contribution of the biomedical and social models of health for transdisciplinary practice for nurses and allied health: professionals. Incorporating contemporary, historical, social and cultural perspectives in local and global contexts to identify social determinants of health. Understanding traditional healing and other healing practices within a diverse community to cultural safe, secure and competent care, which is necessary to build individual and community empowerment. Recognising the impact of gender, sexuality, disability, migration, being a refugee, internally displaced person or member of any marginalised population on health. Participation in the creative arts has been shown to afford a wide range of benefits to mental health and wellbeing for young and old. This subject explores ways in which the creative arts and play can be used therapeutically to support and enhance mental wellbeing for children, adolescents and younger people. It explores particular challenges associated with life events, neurodiversity, or for those who are from minority or marginalised groups. A framework derived from principles of trauma-informed practice is used to inform critical evaluation of complex issues, and to consider appropriate and effective design of creative arts and play-based activities in a variety of scenarios. You will have opportunities to explore your own creativity and gain practical insight into different roles in the therapeutic arts, and to explore your own interests by conducting individual research that will deepen your understanding of the potential of creative arts and play for supporting aspects of the mental wellbeing of a specific cohort.

Creative Arts, Play and Mental Wellbeing

This course examines ageing and disability-friendly design, planning principles, and policy as they relate to the natural and built environments. You’ll learn to apply these planning and design principles to analysing the home, transport and mobility, the workplace, leisure and recreation facilities, and urban spaces. Crucially, you will develop an understanding of the impact of natural and built environments on people who are ageing or living with disablement. This subject explores historical and current case studies of creative arts practitioners from a range of cultural contexts living with physical or mental illness and the ways this is reflected or subsumed in their work. This engagement with creative work provides valuable perspective on lived experience and insights into the impacts of acquired or congenital disability or illness on the creative process and the impacts of the arts on health and wellbeing of individuals. The subject will draw on perspectives and literature of Health Humanities that reinforce empathy in engagement with people experiencing physical or mental illness and promotes patient-centred care and can underpin and enhance a current or future role in planning or delivery of arts programs in healthcare settings and the community.

Develop a critical understanding of disability and ageing as a sociological phenomenon. Examine key sociological theories of disability and ageing, and explore the relationships between society, its institutions, and the social constructions of disability and ageing. Explore the ways that disability and ageing intersect with diverse social (and identity) categories of gender and sexuality, ‘race’ and ethnicity, and socioeconomic status. As Australia’s population ages and awareness of the types and impacts of disability increases, the ability to analyse and critique commonly held assumptions and perceptions about disability and ageing is of critical importance, particularly for people working in community services and social work settings. In this subject you will explore the foundational theoretical frameworks that underpin our understanding of traditional concepts of disability and ageing, and consider alternative perspectives. Reflecting on your personal experiences and examining the divergence and convergence of concepts of ageing and disability, you will have opportunities to enhance your reflective skills and ability to comprehend what disability and/or ageing might mean for individuals, groups and communities. Applying a social lens and person-centered framework to your practice, the subject will help you to understand social worker roles within different organisational contexts.

Challenge what you know about people who are ageing or have a disability. Pick apart traditional concepts and seek alternative perspectives. Think about what disability and ageing mean to the individual and community and reflect on your experiences.

Responding to Disability and Ageing

Teaching students with learning difficulties and disabilities requires additional professional skills. When you study this subject you will learn about the defining features of learning difficulties. This subject explores a range of physical impairments, neurological and/or psychological disorders, and developmental conditions that may be present in your students. You will be introduced to the common types, characteristics, names and terminology used in educational settings when managing students with one or more of these conditions. You will complete reflective exercises which will broaden your understanding of how children with special needs can be included in mainstream classes and investigate the resources which will empower you to be inclusive.

Learning Difficulties and Disabilities: An Introduction

In this subject, you will consider how individuals, families, and communities understand and experience health and wellbeing. Barriers and enablers of health and wellbeing will be explored, with emphasis placed on vulnerable, marginalised and isolated population groups. You will examine how biological, sociological, cultural, environmental and lifestyle factors determine and shape health and wellbeing across the lifespan. You will also develop an understanding of health literacy, readiness for change, and the importance of effective communication in promoting health and wellbeing.
