This subject introduces you to industry approaches taken in threat intelligence and assessment. The subject will be task-focused and will allow you to explore the threat intelligence process with a focus on three key areas: understanding industry threat landscapes; legal and ethical considerations for penetration testing; and understanding and assessing penetration testing processes within industry contexts.

Cyber Threat Intelligence

This subject begins with an overview of the Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) architecture and security attacks on system services, and a discussion of different existing security mechanisms. The main focus includes cryptography, system security, network and web security. The students learn: <ol><li>Cryptographic algorithms and protocols, underlying network security applications including single-key and public-key encryption methods, hash functions, digital signatures and key exchange; </li><li> Intrusion detection systems and firewalls that can be used to protect a computer system from security threats, such as intruders, viruses, and worm; </li><li>The use of cryptographic algorithms and security protocols for providing network and internet security in terms of user authentication/identification, IP security and Web security.</li></ol>

Networks Systems and Web Security

This subject formulates the procedures related to digital forensic and investigation in a computer and a networking scenario. Students critically appraise the key concepts associated with the data hiding, evidence collection and validation and traffic analysis required to perform forensic analysis in a digital environment. Students learn about the importance of the legal considerations and documentation of forensic evidence. Case studies are incorporated to teach practical forensic tools.

Penetration testing encompasses the evaluation of organizational vulnerabilities by conducting thorough security testing. The subject begins with a broad examination of cybercrime and moves to a specific focus on cyber fraud. The subject explores contemporary criminological theoretical approaches to explaining cyber fraud, analyses offender methodologies and examines cyber fraud victimology. The subject addresses contemporary approaches to prevention and enforcement in Australia and across the world. The role of relevant government, law enforcement, regulatory agencies and the corporate and private sector in the prevention and detection of cyber fraud is addressed.

Understanding and Preventing Cyber Fraud

Due to the ubiquitous nature of mobile and wireless technology in our daily lives and business operation, ensuring wireless security is becoming a top priority. This subject explores the security vulnerabilities in wireless networks and cover the fundamental concepts of confidentiality, integrity and availability. The following key concepts will be covered: Wireless LAN Security - Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP), Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA), Authentication Servers (RADIUS), 802.11i security standard; Securing Ad-Hoc Networks - MAC layer misbehaviour, secure routing protocols, types of attacks and solutions, key management, broadcast authentication.

Wireless Network and Security

This subject will cover basic aspects of information and data security including integrity models, message authentication, authentication tools, access controls and cryptography. Topics will focus on data assurance and prevention methods including data integrity methods. This subject also covers basic cyber-attack defences such as firewalls.
