Criminology Skills is designed to develop your academic skills that will be required to achieve success throughout the Criminology degree. Through a series of guided and supported seminars you will participate in applied learning activities to develop your research, academic writing, referencing, and presentation skills. In addition, through group based activities you will also begin to develop employability skills of problem solving, conflict resolution, teamwork, and time management.The subject is also designed for you to begin asking the right questions about crime, harm, and justice. The subject unpacks what crime is, when, where and how it occurs, who is implicated or involved, and why it is understood in particular ways. You will develop important skills in thinking about contemporary criminological debates through understanding varying perspectives surrounding key case studies discussed in lectures and seminars.

Criminology Skills

This is a level one subject, which explores how different understandings of crime have emerged as a response to changing social, political and economic contexts. It explores the usefulness of understandings developed since the eighteenth century to date, for explaining and responding to different types of crime today. The nature and impact of key criminological approaches ranging from classicism and positivism through to current day critical perspectives will be illustrated and analysed through consideration of contemporary case studies. The way in which criminological theories inform practical responses to crime within and beyond the criminal justice system will also be highlighted. In this subject we also consider social inequalities, intersectionality and how theory can help us understand these in the context of criminal justice system.

Understanding Crime

This subject introduces you to the critical concepts, debates, and challenges shaping criminology today by examining the latest cutting-edge research taking place at La Trobe. In particular, it asks you to consider how criminology is evolving in relation to these critical issues and how this evolution might inform better policy responses to crime and harm. You will study various case studies throughout the semester to understand these shifts in criminological thought and practice. These case studies will be based primarily on innovative research conducted by scholars at La Trobe. These scholars will contribute to the subject by presenting their work for you to analyse and providing you with first-hand insight into the latest developments in criminology. In tutorials and assessments, you will engage with, analyse, and critically evaluate this research, fostering a comprehensive understanding of the current state of criminological theory, research, and practice. By the end of the semester, you will have a firm grasp of the critical issues shaping criminology and be well-prepared to contribute to this dynamic field.This is a level 3 subject. Please consider the subject pre-requisites before enrolling. This subject includes live sessions with the expectation of student attendance and participation.
