To meet these challenges, the University of Tasmania, in partnership with major health providers, is launching a more flexible and agile approach to providing educational offerings for health professionals throughout their careers. The Master of Advanced Practice (Specialisation) is designed to provide you with the knowledge and skills to expand your contribution to healthcare and meet your continuing professional development requirements with a flexible online approach. The course has been developed with health industry partners and features a strong inter-disciplinary approach, drawing on content from a broad range of disciplines across the University of Tasmania, with an emphasis on providing you with the flexibility to choose content that best progresses your career ambitions.The program will provide you with a strong foundation in leadership skills and critical thinking, helping you to analyse and resolve the complex problems that you face in the health system. We offer leading online education, based on the latest research, that is suitable for everyone at any stage of their career.The Dementia specialisation provides a global perspective on the impact of dementia on individuals and societies. It is aimed at health professionals building their expertise in aged care and dementia. The rising prevalence of dementia is creating new challenges and a pressing need for change in the way our systems and practices support people who live with dementia - equip yourself with the expertise to lead transformation, based on the latest evidence.The Dementia specialisation offers a comprehensive understanding of dementia from the perspectives of individuals, families, communities, health care systems and governments. You will explore a range of approaches aimed at supporting people living with dementia to maintain healthy lives and examine the ways that healthcare systems and government policy affect health and social care provision.Once you have completed your specialisation you will select a research pathway of your choice.<ul><li>The Capstone Pathway will develop your research skills as you design and conduct a quality improvement project relevant to your workplace and/or career aspirations.</li><li>In the Research Pathway, you will complete a substantial piece of original, independent research, focussed on the topics that are of particular interest, that provides you with a pathway to a Higher Degree by Research.</li></ul>The Master of Advanced Practice (Specialisation) has been co-designed with major health providers for the health workforce, with content developed to meet the needs of health professionals from all disciplines. In this subject students will further develop their knowledge and skills in the delivery of alcohol and other drug interventions. This subject will focus on current contemporary treatment approaches including psychosocial interventions and pharmacological treatments. This includes the range of alcohol and drug interventions and specialist programs such as substitution therapies.

Approaches to Intervention

This subject examines the complex needs of the person requiring Addiction Services. You will explore epidemiological theories of substance abuse and identify principles of dependence within a range of maladaptive behaviours. In addition, you will extend their knowledge and understanding of treatment approaches, withdrawal management and toxicology.

Contexts of Addiction

This subject examines the evidence base for, and the potential impact of, community-level initiatives aimed at (1) reducing the incidence of dementia in the general population, and (2) improving quality of life for those living with dementia. These are classed as public health approaches to dementia. The large- scale impact of dementia on societies, both current and forecast, is surveyed, and used to inform an evaluation of effective public health strategies initiatives designed to reduce this impact. Initiatives investigated include community-wide inclusion and support of people living with dementia and their carers, such as dementia friendly communities and environments, and dementia risk reduction efforts. You will be encouraged to develop skills to explain evidence, arguments and advice on dementia support and prevention in a variety of community contexts.

Community and Public Health Approaches to Dementia 1

This subject examines the effect of policies and systems on the societal impact of dementia, and the effective provision of support, services and resources to people with dementia and the people who care for them, including approaches enabling independent living and optimum health. National approaches to dementia care and health system design are compared and contrasted with respect to current and anticipated needs and financial impact. Students study four modules and a choice of applied modules to tailor their learning to particular interests. Assessments are both online for the content modules, and in the form of written assignments enabling the student to relate the course material to their individual professional and/or personal context.

Policies and Systems in Dementia 1

This subject will enable students to understand and evaluate research and literature in the neurobiology of dementia, and to use and communicate that knowledge in their own personal context. It covers the major elements of the brain and the functions of nerve and glial cells, including neurotransmission, in order to support the understanding of the degenerative processes of dementing diseases, the relationship between genetics, pathology, degeneration, biomarkers and diagnosis, and the basis of therapeutics which affect the central nervous system. A section on the neurophysiology of pain, a significant issue in dementia care, is included.

Neurobiology of Dementia 1

This subject examines social, therapeutic and environmental factors influencing the health and wellbeing of people with dementia, and their carers. The impact of dementia on individuals, and provision for the rights and needs of people with dementia, are the focus of the curriculum. Students are assessed both online for the content modules, and in the form of a written MyContext assignment requiring the student to directly relate the course material to their individual professional and/or personal context.

Health and Social Care in Dementia 1

The subject enables students to examine the foundation of integrated care in health and across Australian communities. There is a specific focus on investigating inter-professional collaboration and practice for the delivery of whole of person care. Students will examine and evaluate integrated care models and their suitability for different healthcare contexts. Students will critically appraise integrated care KPI’s to achieve efficient and effective healthcare services. Students will have opportunities to hear from experts across Australia and participate in industry case studies and analysis.

Foundations of Integrated Care

In this subject, we investigate healthcare principles and models for engagement between healthcare users, their carers and family, and professionals. The importance of consumer engagement and its association with effective, sustainable organisational governance systems is studied. This involves examining theories, systems, processes and actions for partnering with consumers and delivering comprehensive care.To operationalise these requirements, this subject investigates the application of the National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) Partnering with Consumers and Comprehensive Care Standards. Their dependency and integration with other standards in the NSQHS are also reviewed.

Principles and Models for Engagement with Consumers in Healthcare

The organisational resilience and communication fields of knowledge provide frameworks to review clinical governance arrangements. Additionally, quality improvement theory, techniques and approaches are addressed to equip professionals with the practical skills to enhance safe, high-quality care. This knowledge is used to investigate how to achieve effective performance and monitoring systems.To operationalise these requirements, this subject investigates the application of the National Safety and Quality in Health Service (NSQHS) Communicating for Safety and Recognising and Responding to Acute Deterioration Blood Safety Management Standards. Their necessity and integration with other standards in the NSQHS are also reviewed.

Communicating Safety and Quality in Healthcare

The implementation science and organisational reliability fields of knowledge are drawn upon to illuminate safety and quality centrality to clinical governance. This knowledge is used to investigate how to achieve effective performance and monitoring systems that support and promote clinical safety and quality, accountability and transparency within organisations for healthcare users, the workforce and community.To operationalise these requirements, this subject investigates the application of the National Safety and Quality in Health Service (NSQHS) Preventing and Controlling Infections and Medication Safety standards. Their necessity and integration with other standards in the NSQHS are also reviewed.
