You will develop the ability to critically analyse approaches to Case Management in the human services areas of Disability and Aged Care. You will develop advanced knowledge of the definitions, theories, characteristics and processes of case management, the influences on its historical development and practicemodels and critical issues and ethical dilemmas in case management. You will use cognitive and analytic skills to develop their understanding of professional practice, the process of case management and the difference between case management and other service delivery approaches. Support services, both mainstream and specialised, are adopting contemporary disability practices to enable self-determination, choice and control by people with disability. This subject examines the evolution of disability practice with particular emphasis on the reforms arising from the Disability Royal Commission and the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS). Using a rights-based framework, you will explore themes of participation and inclusion and develop professional skills in effective communication, advocacy, support coordination and capacity building.

Contemporary Disability Practice

This subject will provide an introduction to existing evidence-based research on the benefits of engagement with the arts, through the lifespan and strategies employing creativity to support better ageing and mitigate risk factors for dementia. The subject offers opportunities for students to undertake creative tasks, develop their own creativity and reflect on the cognitive benefits.

Understanding traditional healing and other healing practices within a diverse community to cultural safe, secure and competent care, which is necessary to build individual and community empowerment. Recognising the impact of gender, sexuality, disability, migration, being a refugee, internally displaced person or member of any marginalised population on health. Participation in the creative arts has been shown to afford a wide range of benefits to mental health and wellbeing for young and old. This subject explores ways in which the creative arts and play can be used therapeutically to support and enhance mental wellbeing for children, adolescents and younger people. It explores particular challenges associated with life events, neurodiversity, or for those who are from minority or marginalised groups. A framework derived from principles of trauma-informed practice is used to inform critical evaluation of complex issues, and to consider appropriate and effective design of creative arts and play-based activities in a variety of scenarios. You will have opportunities to explore your own creativity and gain practical insight into different roles in the therapeutic arts, and to explore your own interests by conducting individual research that will deepen your understanding of the potential of creative arts and play for supporting aspects of the mental wellbeing of a specific cohort.

Creative Arts, Play and Mental Wellbeing

This unit provides students with real-world learning opportunities in which they apply their disciplinary knowledge, exercise critical thinking and analytical skills, demonstrate effective and professional communication, and work agilely to solve real-world problems. Working with an industry partner, the internship provides a practical bridge between university and the professions. Industry placements can be created and negotiated in diverse ways to suit both students and their industry partners. Students will acquire, demonstrate and reflect upon a diverse range of skills and understandings that prepare them for the future of work.Please Note: All students studying at Murdoch University will need to complete the compulsory unit, Murdoch Academic Passport (MAP100), which only takes 2-3 hours to complete online. This subject will allow you to develop an understanding of professional healthcare delivery in Australia. Areas of professional healthcare delivery that will be examined include; population health and prevention, general practice and community health; emergency health services and hospital care; mental health, rehabilitation and palliative care. You will review and analyse the overall health of Australia&#39;s population and investigate the diverse roles of a range of health professionals in the delivery of healthcare. You will develop critical reasoning skills through relevant case scenarios which introduce enquiry-based learning and teamwork. This subject will support the development of foundation academic skills and information literacy required for successful university study.This subject includes synchronous sessions held during business hours. This means that you will attend sessions each week simultaneously with your facilitator and classmates. This subject is recommended for first-year undergraduate students.
