This subject was previously known as Introduction to Chemistry.This subject introduces fundamental concepts that prepare students for subsequent study in chemistry and support further study in a range of majors. Students learn about the nature of matter at the molecular level. This involves learning language, symbols and representations used to describe matter and chemical reactions. Students develop skills in problem solving and calculations related to chemical quantities, processes and reactions.Please Note: All students studying at Murdoch University will need to complete the compulsory unit, Murdoch Academic Passport (MAP100), which only takes 2-3 hours to complete online. Essentials of Chemistry is an introductory subject for students with minimal background or no previous study in chemistry. The subject introduces chemistry topics with a real-world focus to prepare students for further studies in chemistry and related fields of science. The subject will introduce and reinforce chemistry concepts, knowledge and skills in chemistry to enable students to apply chemical principles and practice during their studies and in future employment. Module 1: General Chemistry covers matter, atoms, the periodic table, chemical bonding, naming compounds, molecular geometry, atomic masses, the mole and chemical reactions. This subject can provide you with an introduction to chemical principles sufficient to be used as a pre-requisite for first Year chemistry subjects that are part of a chemistry major at the University of Tasmania. It is not designed to be a replacement for Year 12 Chemistry as it only covers topics of direct relevance as a background to the first-year subjects. This subject covers introductory chemistry for students with no previous knowledge of chemistry who intend to study the biological sciences. It does not form part of a Biology major but is taken as an elective subject.This subject explores the basic chemical concepts with a particular focus on biological systems and processes such as bonding and structure of organic molecules, aerobic respiration, ions in physiological systems, nutrient cycles and photosynthesis. Topics include fundamental chemical bonding theory, molecular geometry and interactions, reaction types and equilibria, introductory organic chemistry, and introductory thermodynamics. The laboratory program introduces basic techniques and skills commonly used in chemistry relevant to the biological sciences, along with reinforcing chemical concepts with practical experience. To complete this component of the subject, students must attend to complete a set of laboratory exercises. For students selecting an on-campus mode of study, you must attend fortnightly lab sessions throughout semester and students that have enrolled as online students must attend a laboratory workshop delivered in the last week of semester. Both options are on campus at either the Hobart or Launceston campus.

You will consider complex problems as well as the challenges and opportunities relevant to the application of these processes in industry.In conjunction with the discipline theory, this subject builds on concepts of learning through practice in Year 1 of study by introducing you to more complex learning experiences. Separation Principles and Processes

This subject is designed to provide an accessible and practical introduction to Chemistry. In this subject, you will acquire and apply knowledge of chemistry principles and techniques as relevant to applied or industry contexts, with a particular emphasis on biochemical processes. You will be introduced to a range of topics such as chemical analysis, phases of matter, acid-base chemistry, biologically important molecules, and biochemical reactions. During workshops you will use selected techniques to monitor, measure, and analyse, key parameters that are applicable to a broad range of applied and industry contexts. You will apply your learning to industry-based problems, explore potential solutions, and learn to communicate them effectively.

In this subject you will be introduced to the key steps involved in realizing the manufacture of fermented products for commercial purposes. These include process design and optimization, scale-up and manufacturing operations such as cleaning and sterilization, substrate preparation, inoculum development, fermentation monitoring and control, product recovery/formulation, and the treatment of effluent and disposal of waste. You will complement and extend your understanding of the operations discussed by investigating the process, and science, associated with the commercial production of selected fermentation products, by preparing fermented foods/beverages at home, and by participating in an applied research project or a work-integrated learning experience.In conjunction with the discipline theory, this subject introduces learning through practice by exposing you to authentic learning experiences. These experiences are placed at the centre of learning and assessment, so you have the opportunity to develop the skills, knowledge and behaviours necessary to respond to industry, community and/or global needs.
