This Higher Education Certificate may lead students into a Bachelor of Commerce (Business Law) program.The Undergraduate Certificate in Business Law is designed for people who are interested in pursuing a career in business. The Undergraduate Certificate gives student entry (and credit for the four units completed) into the Bachelor of Commerce (Business Law) (OUMU-BSLAW) among others at Curtin.

Undergraduate Certificate in Business Law

Curtin University offers an opportunity for students to study a business law major as part of the Bachelor of Commerce degree. This major provides the knowledge and skills relevant to working in business or government. It does not lead to a professional legal qualification allowing admission to practice as a solicitor or barrister, but it does meet the increasing needs of government and industry, for graduates with a background in law and business studies.

Students discover how the rules of contract formation and operation apply in the business world. Students learn how to understand common business contractual terms and implications to develop an appreciation of how contracts are used to allocate risk. In this subject, students will be introduced to the nature and sources of law and regulation in Australia connected to business. Key aspects of Australian business law and their engagement with and influences on business operations are explored. An introduction to important laws related to consumers, contracts, property, business crime, and more. You’ll explore the rules and institutions that govern business and commerce in Australia. Get to know the legal framework within which businesses operate.

This subject was previously known as BLW22.Studying this subject will introduce you to the Australian Taxation System and get you to critically consider the various aspects of the taxation legislation with a focus on Income Tax, Fringe Benefit Tax, Goods and Services Tax and Capital Gains Tax as well as a detailed investigation into the taxing of various tax entities used in Australia. You will be exposed to considering the global aspect of taxation and how foreign companies and individuals are treated for tax purposes in Australia. Being a tax professional is a privileged position but it comes with both social and ethical responsibilities and in this unit we will identify these as well as taking a detailed looked at the various bodies associated with the administration and review of the Australian Taxation System such as the Australia Taxation Office, Inspector General of Taxation and the Tax Practitioners Board. Students will also develop an understanding of the relationship between a business enterprise and various stakeholders, including government, customers and the broader community.
