This program is designed to be accessible even to those who have never considered a career in science before. One of the program&#39;s unique optional focus areas is &quot;Fermentation&quot;, which is ideal for individuals looking to enter innovative food and beverage industries like cheesemaking, brewing, winemaking, and fermented food and beverage production. Core subjects cover essential topics such as science fundamentals, applied biology, data analysis, and sustainability. Additionally, students have the flexibility to choose four elective subjects that align with their specific interests. This program was created in response to the growing demand within the fermentation industries, making it highly relevant to current job market needs. A standout feature of this program is its strong emphasis on learning, allowing students to enhance their problem-solving, communication, critical thinking, teamwork, and leadership skills by actively applying what they learn. Industry experts have played a pivotal role in the course&#39;s development and continue to contribute to its delivery through teaching, site visits, case studies, and work placements. The program offers both full-time and part-time study options. Diploma of Applied Science

The Undergraduate Certificate in Science is your opportunity to learn more about the world the around you, and dip your toes in an exciting future career in science.This program will introduce you to the nature and role of science in society. You’ll examine what science is, the importance of science for sustainable development, and learn about the role of ethical conduct in scientific endeavour.You’ll explore keys topics in biology, such as metabolism, growth and production, sensing and response, and adaption and evolution, and have the opportunity to apply your knowledge in practical laboratory experiences. You will also learn how to collect and analyse scientific data and statistics, and be introduced to data management software where you’ll learn how to present and communicate statistical information effectively.This program has been developed in consultation with industry experts, such as Fementasmania and the aquaculture industry, and incorporates learning through practice by giving you authentic learning experiences. This means you’ll be developing the skills, knowledge and behaviours necessary to respond to industry demands, placing you in good stead for a future career in science-based growth industries, such as fermentation or salmon aquaculture. If you complete the Undergraduate Certificate in Science and wish to continue further study, you can apply for an Associate Degree in Applied Science or Bachelor of Science.

Foundations of Human Biology 1

This introductory subject will explore the physical and cognitive changes that occur during the ageing process, and age-related pathological changes that can lead to diseases that cause dementia. This subject will introduce fundamental neuroscience concepts in the healthy adult, ageing and diseased nervous systems, with a focus on brain structure and function. Throughout this subject, students will learn how to find scholarly literature, and how to recognise and summarise scientific evidence to use in their academic communication.

This subject introduces students to the science disciplines underpinning the study of marine and Antarctic environments and the application of science to solve problems in marine and Antarctic disciplines. It provides the foundational skills and knowledge for students in the Bachelor of Marine and Antarctic Science for specialised study in years 2 and 3.Topics that are covered include:• an understanding of Gondwana and geology of Antarctica, sub-Antarctic islands and the surrounding ocean;• ice and climate studies;• the physical and chemical nature of the Southern Ocean;• the terrestrial and marine environment of the Antarctic, sub-Antarctic and cool temperate areas, including plants, animals, birds and fish;• the impact of humans on marine and Antarctic environments, including the study of global climate change.The students will benefit from lectures delivered by experts in their field, including guest lecturers, and further develop their understanding through in-class debates and hands-on fieldwork and laboratory practicals (available online).

A deeper scientific exploration of Antarctica and the Southern Ocean. Dive into the science of ice, climate, and oceanography. Take a look at the geology of Antarctica and the plants, animals, birds and fish that inhabit the region.

Introduction to Marine and Antarctic Science B

Seventy percent of the planet is covered by ocean. This subject introduces students to Planet Ocean through four modules, covering key topics on marine life and the ecology of temperate and high latitude marine ecosystems (Module 1); the ocean system as interactions between physical, chemical, geological and ecological features (Module 2); the role of the oceans in climate change and how climate change affects ocean life and ocean processes (Module 3); and finishes up by considering the responsibilities of humans in the stewardship of the oceans; how human activity impacts the oceans and the challenges and approaches to ocean stewardship (Module 4). We cover the origins of life in the oceans, iconic and ‘weird’ marine life, ‘a day in the life’ of an oceanographer, and a number of topics highly relevant to modern society including technologies for ocean science, responding to climate change, threatened species, and sustainable management of marine resources including fisheries.

This subject is designed to provide an accessible and practical introduction to microbiology. In this subject, you will acquire and apply knowledge of microbiology principles and techniques as relevant to applied or industry contexts. You will be introduced to key microbiology concepts, such as the impact of microorganisms, microbial characteristics and interactions, microbial-risk management, microbiological technologies, and emerging microbiological opportunities, as relevant to a range of applications and scenarios.Through a laboratory workshop, you will gain practical knowledge and insight into microbiology techniques. You will develop technical observation skills, and also select, explore, and communicate specific microbiological techniques, including their relative advantages and disadvantages for different applied contexts. You will build on this approach to assess and communicate real-world microbiology challenges through different perspectives.

Applied Microbiology

In this subject, you will be introduced to the biology and biological processes of aquatic animals and plants commonly encountered in aquaculture operations. You will be introduced to phylogenetic relationships and investigate the anatomy, physiology, and life history of eukaryotes, protozoa, finfish, shellfish, crustaceans, micro-organisms, algae, jellies, hydrozoans, bryozoans, seabirds, marine mammals and relevant pest species. You will develop practical skills in sample collection, animal and plant identification, microscopy, dissection techniques, scientific drawing and science communications.This subject also incorporates learning through practice by exposing you to authentic learning experiences. These experiences are placed at the centre of learning and assessment, for you to develop the skills, knowledge and behaviours necessary to respond to industry, community and/or global needs. You will be introduced to:- a range of methods, tools, techniques and approaches to practice- principles and perspectives such as values, ethics, empathy and leadership in real world scenarios- reflection and deliberative thinking as a means of developing knowledge, skills, attitudes and aspirations- ways of understanding problems and developing solutions through active inquiry.

Biology of Aquaculture Animals and Plants

This subject provides you with a solid foundation in biology, equipping you with the knowledge and skills needed to pursue careers in various biology-related fields or to continue with academic studies in further biology-focused subjects. The subject fosters critical thinking, scientific inquiry, and extends your understanding using hands-on activities. You will also gain an awareness of the ethical and environmental aspects of biology, preparing you to address real-world challenges and contribute to the advancement of science and society.In conjunction with the discipline theory, this subject introduces learning through practice by exposing you to authentic learning experiences. These experiences are placed at the centre of learning and assessment, so you have the opportunity to develop the skills, knowledge and behaviours necessary to respond to industry, community and/or global needs. You will be introduced to:<ul><li>a range of methods, tools, techniques and approaches to practice - principles and perspectives such as values, ethics, empathy and leadership in real world scenarios</li><li>reflection and deliberative thinking as a means of developing knowledge, skills, attitudes and aspirations</li><li>ways of understanding problems and developing solutions through active inquiry.</li></ul>

Applied Biology

This advanced subject builds on the intermediate material covered in PSY224 (Behavioural and Cognitive Neuroscience) which forms a basis for understanding neuropsychological and neuropsychiatric disorders. Lectures in neuropsychology will cover the neuroscience of major neuropsychological disorders and syndromes (e.g., neurodegenerative and developmental disorders, and acquired brain injury), the functional consequences of brain dysfunction, and an introduction to clinical neuropsychological assessment and intervention. Lectures in clinical neuroscience will cover evidence for the neuroscientific basis of neuropsychiatric disorders such as schizophrenia, anxiety, and depression. Compulsory practicals (either on campus classes or online activities) will build on topics covered in lectures through interactive activities and demonstrations, including an introduction to neuropsychological test administration, and discussion of case studies of neuropsychological and behavioural disorders/syndromes.

Neuropsychology and Clinical Neuroscience

In this subject you will not only learn about the science behind fishing techniques and how these interact with the biology and behaviour of a species, but also how recreational fisheries are sustainably managed and how you can be a responsible fisher. Important and interesting questions/skills for fishers include: identifying a species, determining what they eat and understanding how their biology, sensory abilities, preferred habitats and behavior influence fishing techniques. After completion of this subject you may change the way you fish, with both an improved fishing experience and a greater understanding of how to fish safely and responsibly for the future.

Science of Fishing 1

This subject uses research into the biological basis of dementia to explore the specific pathology of the more common diseases causing, or associated with, dementia. Students will learn the relationship between the development of pathology in the nervous system and the clinical features of dementia related illnesses including Alzheimer’s disease, frontotemporal dementia and Lewy body dementia. The subject will explore how the diseases that cause dementia progress throughout the lifespan, and will explore the current tools and techniques used in diagnosing dementia-related illnesses.

The Neurobiology of Dementia

Neuroscience is the study of how the nervous system works, how the cells of the system are organised and how they develop and change in the presence of common pathological conditions, including dementia. Through learning the fundamental principles of neuroscience, students are supported to develop the necessary academic and technological skills to become successful in online study. Students learn how to access and interpret different forms of scientific literature, and develop a neuroscience vocabulary that will form the springboard for further studies in their degree path.
