In this subject, you will first be introduced to concepts fundamental to the understanding of Human Physiology such as the organisation of the human body, homeostasis, basic cell structure and function, body fluids and the movement of molecules within body fluid compartments. The basics of nervous system and endocrine system function in the context of physiological regulation and homeostasis will then be explored. This information will provide the foundation for the study of major organ systems of the body including the muscular, digestive, cardiovascular, immune, respiratory, renal, and reproductive systems. This subject will also include content on metabolism of nutrients and acid-base homeostasis.

By delving into plant anatomy, physiology, and reproductive strategies, students will gain a deep understanding of how plants acquire and utilise resources, interact with their environment, and contribute to ecosystem functioning. This unit provides a comprehensive understanding of the intricate relationships between plants in various ecosystems, and their impact on nutrient cycling and ecosystem processes. Skills gained in plant experimentation can be applied to careers in microbiology, ecology, environmental science, and biotechnology.

Plants

This unit offers a comprehensive exploration of the vast range of animal diversity. Students will examine the evolutionary history, evolutionary relationships, and ecological adaptations of animals across aquatic and terrestrial habitats. Topics covered include animal anatomy, physiology, and behaviour. Students will gain a deep understanding of how animals interact with their environment and take on roles in ecosystems. Through hands-on experience with animals and with data analysis, students will develop critical thinking and observational skills while deepening their understanding of animal evolution and ecology.

Animals

Students will be introduced to how mathematical models are used in biological, biophysical sciences and we will emphasise insight into how models may be derived from biophysical assumptions. A small but representative range of biophysical applications is investigated. The strengths and limitations of models to make predictions about ecological sustainability are explored. The subject is organised in modules, each focusing on a specific application.  Learning resources including all lecture materials will be available on-line. Students participate in two 1-hour problem solving classes per week to work through problem sets designed to strengthen basic mathematical skills. Considerable use will be made of spreadsheets as a tool for understanding mathematical models and performing calculations.

Mathematical Applications In Biology
