In this subject, you will first be introduced to concepts fundamental to the understanding of Human Physiology such as the organisation of the human body, homeostasis, basic cell structure and function, body fluids and the movement of molecules within body fluid compartments. The basics of nervous system and endocrine system function in the context of physiological regulation and homeostasis will then be explored. This information will provide the foundation for the study of major organ systems of the body including the muscular, digestive, cardiovascular, immune, respiratory, renal, and reproductive systems. This subject will also include content on metabolism of nutrients and acid-base homeostasis.

Map the complex architecture of the human body and learn how it’s organised and structured. Navigate the journey of the smallest cell to the largest organ. Observe how the body performs and adapts, responding to stress and disease to maintain life.

This subject serves as an introduction to the human body and key organ systems. It begins with anatomical terminology and the relationships between body cells, tissues and organs. Key cell processes such as respiration, protein synthesis, and cell division will be covered. Students will then explore the basic function and control of the circulatory, respiratory, digestive and excretory systems, and how these systems contribute to the changing needs of the human body. The subject includes exploration of the lymphatic and immune systems and how they provide defence against microorganisms. This unit offers a comprehensive exploration of the vast range of animal diversity. Students will examine the evolutionary history, evolutionary relationships, and ecological adaptations of animals across aquatic and terrestrial habitats. Topics covered include animal anatomy, physiology, and behaviour. Students will gain a deep understanding of how animals interact with their environment and take on roles in ecosystems. Through hands-on experience with animals and with data analysis, students will develop critical thinking and observational skills while deepening their understanding of animal evolution and ecology. Animals

Students will be introduced to how mathematical models are used in biological, biophysical sciences and we will emphasise insight into how models may be derived from biophysical assumptions. A small but representative range of biophysical applications is investigated. The strengths and limitations of models to make predictions about ecological sustainability are explored. The subject is organised in modules, each focusing on a specific application.  Learning resources including all lecture materials will be available on-line. Students participate in two 1-hour problem solving classes per week to work through problem sets designed to strengthen basic mathematical skills. Considerable use will be made of spreadsheets as a tool for understanding mathematical models and performing calculations.

Mathematical Applications In Biology

This subject introduces you to human physiology - how the body works. You&#39;ll learn how the body is organised and the basics of cell structure and function, and how processes in the body are controlled. This will provide the foundation for the study of the major body systems important for support and movement (muscular system); regulation, integration and control (nervous and endocrine systems); fluids and transport (blood, heart, cardiovascular and immune systems); energy, maintenance and environmental exchange (respiratory, digestive and renal systems, metabolism); and the continuity of life (reproductive systems).

Human Biosciences A

This subject serves as an introduction to the biological bases of behaviour. Nerve cells are the basic building blocks of the brain. Therefore their functioning and methods of communicating form the basic principles of brain and nervous system functioning. Hence this subject includes introductory lectures on the elements of the nervous system that contribute to the conscious and unconscious aspects of behaviour. There is an emphasis on understanding how the cells of the nervous system function and communicate with each other, thus allowing us to explain how sensory information, drugs, and hormonal changes influence behaviour, as well as how behaviour influences the brain.
