Research is demonstrating ways in which music, visual arts, theatre and other creative arts can contribute to addressing these challenges.The Undergraduate Certificate in Creative Arts and Health will develop your understanding of the effects of the arts on the brain and body in social and cultural contexts. Design is at work in every aspect of human existence. We humans are continuously designing and shaping the world around us – from the molecular through to the planetary scale. People are inherently change agents and with a design education, you can make change towards resilience and creative adaptation in our constantly changing world. In this program we’ll guide you to work with design thinking and design processes, visual language and form, people-centred design, and strategies and tools for creative enterprise. This subject will provide an introduction to existing evidence-based research on the benefits of engagement with the arts, through the lifespan and strategies employing creativity to support better ageing and mitigate risk factors for dementia. The subject offers opportunities for students to undertake creative tasks, develop their own creativity and reflect on the cognitive benefits.

Explore how enjoying artistic activities contributes to peoples’ wellbeing and quality of life. Learn how to engage people in imaginative pieces that communicate their thoughts and emotions—and work on your own creative project too!

In this subject, you will be introduced to basic features of the design toolsets used in digital fabrication. Weekly online content will assist you in developing the underpinning technical skills required to become proficient in 3D Computer Aided Design (CAD) modelling.  These skills include:  <ul><li>File management  </li><li>2D sketching  </li><li>3D modelling  </li><li>Sheet metal part construction </li><li>Using assemblies, constraints and joints </li><li>Developing drawings and presentations. For your assessment tasks, you will use these skills to solve a user specific design problem.  </li></ul>To achieve this, you will follow the design thinking process to design a product that effectively meets the end users’ specific requirements, reflecting on how your solution meets their objectives. You will also explain the environmental impact of your design and identify ways in which the lifecycle of the product can be structured in order to meet sustainability objectives. You will then use the presentation facilities within the CAD software program to share your solution.This subject also introduces learning through practice by exposing you to authentic learning experiences. These experiences are placed at the centre of learning and assessment, so you have the opportunity to develop the skills, knowledge and behaviours necessary to respond to industry, community and/or global needs.  You will be introduced to a range of methods, tools, techniques and approaches to practice. This will enable you to understand the root cause of design problems and develop solutions through active inquiry. You will also consider a range of principles and perspectives in your design work such as values, ethics, empathy and leadership while operating in real world scenarios. Upon completion of your projects, you will use reflection and deliberative thinking as a means of developing knowledge, skills, attitudes and aspirations.

Computer Aided Design (CAD)

Practical interventions employing arts-based activities, including music, theatre, dance and visual arts, are increasingly being employed nationally and internationally to improve mood and well-being, physical activity and cognitive processing for people with dementia. Arts-based programs have also been shown to have some capacity to enhance communication of emotions and relationships with carers. This subject will explore the evidence-based research on the benefits that can be conferred through the stimulation of sensory perception, reminiscence and subconscious movement using music, theatre, dance and visual arts. These will be dealt with in three separate modules. Students will develop knowledge of model interventions employing music, theatre, dance and visual arts, and each module will also provide an introduction to key elements of successful program design and the range of activities that can be employed.

Explore how music, dance, and theatre can improve the lives of people with dementia. You’ll review case studies and research for examples of creative activities. Think about your own arts program and how you can influence patients’ wellbeing.

The Arts and Dementia Care

Through this subject you will explore and analyse spaces of interaction that operate on different scales and with different sets of relations, for example human and non-human, analogue and digital. Drawing from diverse design methodologies you will learn approaches to design decision making through collaboration, empathy, diverse knowledge and insight.This subject introduces you to the roles of context, experience and feedback in design processes which are inherently fluid and messy. You will learn how to gain contextual understanding of a problem by applying different perspectives and drawing on experiences, histories, narratives, and data - of people, places, objects and systems. You will also develop methods for researching, conceptualising, and developing insights.By doing primary and secondary research on a given topic, you will create the foundation for designing an interface based on analysis, conceptual development and low-fi prototyping. Throughout the design process you will seek and provide feedback by engaging in design critique to evidence design decisions and refine your design.

User Experience (UX) Design

In this subject, you will investigate elements and principles of visual language in art and design, to understand the importance of aesthetics in design and its application to real-world projects. You will also be introduced to the nature of ‘aesthetics,’ including cultural and historical ideals of representation, perception, and style.Colour, pattern, form, shape, texture, space, line and balance are just a few of the many factors you will be exposed to, to understand design aesthetics. You will learn to observe and evaluate how these factors impact on the observed and built environments and be introduced to design aesthetics and its relationship to natural, cultural and social contexts.

Design Aesthetics

Design thinking draws on creative, iterative and collaborative approaches to problem-solving, including exploration of potential solutions though idea generation, rapid prototyping and testing. While conventional approaches to problem-solving often rely on the application of highly structured methodologies and process controls, design thinking encourages incorporation of diverse perspectives, free association of ideas, subjective perspectives and emotional inputs. Design thinking often generates innovative solutions to problems due to its more open-ended approach.In this subject, you will be introduced to the principles of design thinking through investigation of design thinking theory, as well as specific examples and case studies. You will then apply these principles in a small-scale project that involves problem formulation and application of design thinking to the development of proposed solutions. The subject provides you with opportunities to learn and apply the key concepts, principles and processes of design thinking. As a result, you will explore the theory, as well as use design thinking tools and techniques in practice.

Design Thinking

Ever wonder why that tune gets stuck in your head, or when you listen to your favourite song your foot starts tapping, or why it&#39;s easier to remember the words of a song when you sing the tune? How do you choose the best music for a restaurant or in a dentist&#39;s surgery? Find out the answers to these questions and more in Music, Mind and Body. This subject explores the influence and impact of music and music-making on the human mind and body. You will develop an understanding of the way in which the brain perceives and processes music and learn about the development of musical taste, the effects of music on mood, creativity and improvisation, and the benefits of music listening and participation at all life stages. You will also learn about issues pertinent to health and wellbeing of amateur and professional musicians, including injury prevention. You will gain an understanding of research methods used to study music psychology, and critical thinking skills in evaluating research design. Music, Mind and Body will be valuable for all students interested in the use of music to enhance wellbeing. It will be of direct relevance for performing musicians, with strategies to broaden applications of music for a portfolio career or to help sustain a performing career. The subject will also be of interest to students from creative arts, humanities and social and health sciences pathways who are interested in incorporating music in their area of work, e.g. in rehabilitation, or in aged care, or in applied psychological and health science research.

We know the impact that photographic images can have on us, individually and collectively. When images and words come together to tell a story they can be entertaining, revelatory, breath-taking, and even powerful agents of change. In this subject, you will learn how to create a photo essay, by honing your writing skills and learning how to create, select, and edit photographic and digital images. Putting words and images together, you will identify how to use the photo essay format for professional and creative expression and evaluate how this format and the skills that you have learnt can be applied in the context of Creative Arts and Health.

The Photo Essay: Storytelling with Image and Text

In this subject you will learn about Music and the Visual Arts as key areas of the Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF) and the Australian Curriculum: The Arts. You will become familiar with the research that supports the practice of the Arts in education and apply this to your planning, teaching and reflection. You will experiment with, reflect on and apply the elements of Music and Visual Arts to Early Childhood and Primary contexts and to key Australian curriculum documents. As a culminating performance of your learning you will plan, teach and reflect on a short Music or Visual Arts teaching session.
