This subject aims to develop an awareness of environmental and human health impacts of housing in order to inform critical and creative decision-making in the design and renovation of houses. You will explore how housing affects our own health and the health of the planet, and how sustainable design can reduce environmental impacts and improve wellbeing. You will also learn how to make design choices that are more sustainable in relation to your personal needs and circumstances. The subject will emphasise reflective thinking, practical knowledge and an integrated approach that relates issues of sustainability to quality design, functionality and value.

Design and renovate healthy and sustainable homes. You’ll unpack what sustainability means for dwellings. Look into designing for health and climate. Exercise your creativity. Get to know sustainable products and building materials.

This subject focuses on learning research methods to solve real problems. You will come to understand how to design research, define an argument in response to the problems, use scholarly databases, consider ethical issues in data collection, generate field data, analyse and present these data, interpret results, and reflect on all these processes and their application to, for example, policy and professional contexts. The subject is a professional pathway in Masters programs in geography, planning, and spatial sciences.

Professional Research Methods

In this subject, you will be introduced to basic features of the design toolsets used in digital fabrication. Weekly online content will assist you in developing the underpinning technical skills required to become proficient in 3D Computer Aided Design (CAD) modelling.  These skills include:  <ul><li>File management  </li><li>2D sketching  </li><li>3D modelling  </li><li>Sheet metal part construction </li><li>Using assemblies, constraints and joints </li><li>Developing drawings and presentations. For your assessment tasks, you will use these skills to solve a user specific design problem.  </li></ul>To achieve this, you will follow the design thinking process to design a product that effectively meets the end users’ specific requirements, reflecting on how your solution meets their objectives. You will also explain the environmental impact of your design and identify ways in which the lifecycle of the product can be structured in order to meet sustainability objectives. You will then use the presentation facilities within the CAD software program to share your solution.This subject also introduces learning through practice by exposing you to authentic learning experiences. These experiences are placed at the centre of learning and assessment, so you have the opportunity to develop the skills, knowledge and behaviours necessary to respond to industry, community and/or global needs.  You will be introduced to a range of methods, tools, techniques and approaches to practice. This will enable you to understand the root cause of design problems and develop solutions through active inquiry. You will also consider a range of principles and perspectives in your design work such as values, ethics, empathy and leadership while operating in real world scenarios. Upon completion of your projects, you will use reflection and deliberative thinking as a means of developing knowledge, skills, attitudes and aspirations.

Computer Aided Design (CAD)

In this subject you will learn project management concepts, tools and processes used in the formulation, delivery and management of construction projects. Your learning will focus on practical examples and incorporate analysis of construction project case studies. You will develop skills in construction project management processes, project troubleshooting, and formulation of a detailed project plan. This subject will include tutorials and workshops with guest speakers from industry and provide you with the opportunity to consolidate your learnings from other subjects.Note: We recommend completing this unit last as per the recommended study pattern for Diploma of Construction Management (TAS-CMG-DIP).

In this subject, you will apply the concepts of stakeholder and project risk management to construction projects. You will prepare a stakeholder plan, undertake a risk study on a key aspect of a construction project, and conduct a risk and compliance audit. Your focus will be on identifying opportunities for continual improvement in risk and compliance management through the development of practical and contemporary solutions that can be implemented on a construction project.

Stakeholder and Risk Management in Construction

This subject will familiarise you with the legislation framework, Australian standards and codes of practice for construction of buildings and civil structures. Key areas covered will include construction codes, work health and safety, Aboriginal and cultural heritage, and environmental legislation. It is important for paraprofessionals within the building and civil construction industries to correctly identify, interpret and apply these regulatory requirements to construction projects. You will have structured opportunities to develop your literacy in construction standards and legislation through industry-specific case studies and real-world research activities.

Legislation and Standards in Construction

In this subject you will build on your understanding of construction principles and terminology to learn the fundamentals of managing and controlling construction project costs. Through applied activities, you will develop your skills in analysing cash flow, interpreting cost reports, and communicating cost information.

Construction Cost Management

In this subject you will develop the knowledge and skills needed to undertake planning for protected area systems. We will explore the frameworks, processes and methods used to identify areas for inclusion in national reserve systems. Students will have the opportunity to apply and compare reserve selection methods using Tasmania as a case study. Topics covered include system purposes and priorities; national reserve planning frameworks; systematic conservation planning; government reserve selection processes; and collaborative and participatory approaches. Students without prior experience in GIS and spatial analysis will be given a basic introduction to these skills. Note, the software taught in this course works best with a Microsoft operating system.

Reserve System Planning

Conservation efforts globally are focussed primarily on biodiversity, but geodiversity elements and features such as soils, rivers, mountains and caves provide humans with a wealth of ecosystem services and enjoyment. In this subject, you will learn about how to recognise geodiversity elements as critical system supports for biodiversity and ecosystem function, and to appreciate their cultural and recreational value for society. Using a series of masterclasses with global experts (in-field, in person or online), you will be immersed in the practices of &#39;geoconservation&#39; and &#39;geotourism&#39;. With no prior knowledge or skills required, you will develop skills as a communicator and conservation professional, and learn how to:- Rank and assess geodiversity elements (as &#39;subjects&#39; of conservation) and features in terms of their rarity, uniqueness, importance to science and society,- Construct inventories of abiotic, biotic and cultural elements and values for recreation and reserve establishment- Undertake in-field degradation assessments of landscapes used by humans for tourism and production- Recommend management strategies to restore landscape features and values for human enjoyment and wilderness protection- Undertake decision-making in a range of modes – graphical, consensus methods, GIS methods and qualitative methods.- Communicate landscape features and conservation strategies to a broad range of audiences.Any student interested in how to undertake conservation practice, curate heritage, assess landscape suitability for tourism and other ventures, or to communicate natural values will find KGA527 useful. All skills and knowledge required to successfully complete KGA527 are developed within the subject.

Landscape Conservation and Recreation

Architecture Theory: Built Environments explores political, cultural, environmental and historical contexts and their relation to the production and inhabitation of the built environment. A series of thematic discussions introduces you to ideas and precedents in spatial design disciplines across a range of scales and a breadth of historical and cultural contexts. Presentations on strategies for analysing the built environment will give you tools to investigate precedents of your own choosing throughout the semester. At the end of the subject, you will be familiar with both visual and textual means of communicating about how the built environment relates to its varied contexts.  This subject focuses on establishing and enhancing students’ capacity to think with clarity and rigour to ensure solid bases for research inquiry and design practice. At Intermediate level, this subject provide foundational understandings of the history and lived spaces of architecture and built environments.
