By setting visions and policies for building and land use, planning professionals play a significant role in creating these spaces.This subject provides an introduction to the language and processes of planning in relation to land use and built form. Different land-use and development situations will be explored, including how they interact with broader societal contexts.This will provide a deeper understanding of planning practice, and its real-world influence.

Planning for Land Use and Built Form

Plans are vital instruments in urban and regional planning. They envisage the future of a local environment and shape land use and development practice.Making plans requires a diverse skill set, including site analysis, data analysis, mapping, plan drawing, and code writing. In this subject you will be introduced to these skills through a wide variety of practical exercises.As the subject progresses, you will develop an understanding of how these practical skills help build towards an integrated plan. At the end of the subject, you will understand how graphical communication, data analysis, site investigation, and built form analysis contribute to planning work.

Introduction to Plan Making

Students will focus on developing their knowledge, skills and practice in urban design and urban planning through a studio and design project. Using a series of practical case studies, urban strategic planning and design exercises and working in groups and individual modules, students take a leading role in developing plans and designs for urban settlements. Attention in the subject is given to establishing projects that deliver net community benefit.This is a level 2 subject. Please consider the subject pre-requisites before enrolling.

Urban Design Project

In this subject you will develop a comprehensive understanding of natural environmental considerations when planning for regional scale projects. You will undertake planning studio work which will illustrate planning as a process of broader policy framing with a special focus on the spatial manifestation of environmental features and how they relate to place/s. You will grapple with key environmental challenges and address them through statutory and strategic planning perspectives. Planning for Environmental Sustainability

This subject introduces students to sources of law affecting building projects (including the judicial system, common and statute law, contract law, torts and dispute resolution) in relation to the various types of contracts available for project delivery. In teaching students how to utilise their knowledge of construction law and contracts in relation to the various types of procurement strategies, contracts and dispute resolution strategies/methodologies, this unit also aims to enable students to learn how to assess, highlight and address the competing priorities of time, cost, quality, risk transfer and risk mitigation to determine the most appropriate form of project procurement strategies for a specific project.Please Note: If it’s your first time studying a Curtin University subject you’ll need to complete their compulsory ‘Academic Integrity Program’. It focuses on extreme, complex and bizarre environments. Philosophical and theoretical readings are explored as other ways of thinking and seeing the world. Sustainable Future and the Built Environment

This subject provides an introduction to principles of interior lighting design and its application techniques in order to develop fundamental specialist knowledge. This subject introduces the concept of Adaptive Reuse and Heritage, the initiation of sustainable design responses to the adaptive re-use contemporary reuse of historic buildings with minimal impact on the heritage significance. Students will undertake research methods to synthesise knowledge and technical skills in ways that embrace history, and includes indigenous perspectives, in a contemporary context.
