The Undergraduate Certificate in Agriculture is your opportunity to learn how to tackle some of the world’s biggest challenges in food production and sustainable farming – all while building a career in a fast-growing industry.You’ll learn about historical developments of the agricultural and horticultural industries in Tasmania and Australia, as well as learn about current and future opportunities predicted for the industry. You’ll be introduced to key concepts in food and fibre production, such as supply chains, value chains, value adding, and quality assessment, and explore the challenges of pests, weeds, and diseases in primary production, including the impact on productivity, profit and market access. You’ll also learn about Tasmanian animal production systems and explore a variety of strategies that growers use to meet their production targets.As part of this program, you’ll have the opportunity to attend excursions to Tasmanian commercial animal production enterprises, as well as hear from guest speakers in your practical tutorial sessions. This program also provides an opportunity for you to attend a 3.5 day field trip to the north-west of the state during the mid-semester break.

This subject focuses on the critical components of animal management for profitability and sustainability of ruminant production systems. Topics will include animal health, welfare, fertility, genetics, feed budgeting and pasture management. You will investigate the main factors affecting ruminant health and the strategies available to prevent and manage such conditions. You will explore how animal ethics and welfare need to be incorporated into farm planning. The subject will provide examples of how farmers improve ruminant reproductive performance, irrespective of their farming system and how they make informed decisions around breeding and grazing management.

Herd and Pasture Management

In this subject you will learn how soil characteristics including physical, chemical and biological properties underpin and inform the development and implementation of soil management strategies. You will investigate how soil health, plant productivity and ecosystem services can be influenced by land use, management practices and agricultural production activities. You will also explore how effective and sustainable soil management strategies can maintain and improve soil form and function in different ecological landscapes.This subject also incorporates learning through practice by exposing you to authentic learning experiences. Principles of Soil Management

In this subject you will learn the principles of agricultural crop production, which include planning, establishment and management of crops to achieve optimal crop growth and yield. You will learn how different crop plants have specific growing requirements such as environment, nutrients and water. You will also explore different management approaches and how they impact on crop health and agricultural productivity.This subject incorporates learning through practice by exposing you to authentic learning experiences. These experiences are placed at the centre of learning and assessment to provide you with opportunities to develop the skills, knowledge and behaviours necessary to respond to industry, community and/or global needs.Through a range of learning experiences, you will be introduced to:<ul><li>approaches and practices relative to sustainable crop production;</li><li>comparative analysis of crop management approaches.</li></ul>

Principles of Crop Production

In this subject you will examine human impacts of agricultural production on ecosystem services, ecosystem functions and biodiversity. You will also learn how these services interact with agricultural production in relation to biosecurity, food security, and land management. You will explore concepts related to environmental-economic accounting, including true cost accounting and natural capital accounting. You will be provided with opportunities to formulate practice-based management solutions that are feasible, economically viable, socially and ethically acceptable, and environmentally sustainable.This subject also incorporates learning through practice by exposing you to authentic learning experiences. These experiences are placed at the centre of learning and assessment to provide you with opportunities to develop the skills, knowledge and behaviours necessary to respond to industry, community and/or global needs.Through a range of learning experiences you will be introduced to:- approaches and practices relative to sustainable management of agricultural ecosystems;- ways of understanding problems associated with agricultural production systems and developing solutions.

This subject will provide you with an understanding of biological, geological, chemical and physical processes, as they relate to agricultural production systems. Processes explored will include biogeochemical cycles, photosynthesis, respiration, energy flows and transfer of nutrients. You will learn about the roles and interactions of living organisms and non-living components of agricultural production systems. You will have the opportunity to explore agricultural production systems and processes through practical experiences, tutorials and workshops.This subject incorporates learning through practice by exposing you to authentic learning experiences. These experiences are placed at the centre of learning and assessment to provide you with opportunities to develop the skills, knowledge and behaviours necessary to respond to industry, community and/or global needs. Principles of Agricultural Production

This subject creates a practical awareness of e-enabled agribusiness and the use of technology in areas such as precision agriculture, livestock tracking and food traceability. You will explore the concepts of innovation including the innovation diffusion process and observe the difference between product and process innovation. The subject will prepare you to evaluate the opportunities technologies and e-business can provide new and existing agri-businesses.This subject also incorporates learning through practice by exposing you to authentic learning experiences. These experiences are placed at the centre of learning and assessment, so you can develop the skills, knowledge, and behaviours necessary to respond to industry, community and/or global needs. You will be introduced to:- a range of methods, tools, techniques, and approaches to practice- principles and perspectives such as values, ethics, empathy, and leadership in real world scenarios- reflection and deliberative thinking as a means of developing knowledge, skills, attitudes and aspirations- ways of understanding problems and developing solutions through active inquiry.

In this subject you will explore the risks and challenges of pests, weeds and diseases in primary production, in terms of the relative impact on productivity, profitability and market access. You will also investigate various on-farm control methods that are used within an Integrated Pest Management framework to manage those risks. You will be provided with on-farm scenarios to investigate potential solutions for issues considering holistic approaches and sustainability. This subject also incorporates learning through practice by exposing you to authentic learning experiences. These experiences are placed at the centre of learning and assessment, so you have the opportunity to develop the skills, knowledge and behaviours necessary to respond to industry, community and/or global needs. You will be introduced to:- a range of methods, tools, techniques and approaches to practice in relation to weeds, pests and diseases.- ways of understanding problems and developing solutions through range of active learning experiences.

In this subject you will be introduced to value chains and how they are managed in primary production to improve business performance. Value chain management (VCM) is an important concept that integrates supply chain components and processes with performance management, monitoring, communication, governance and value. You will investigate stakeholders, beneficiaries, value chain structure and value-creating elements, and be exposed to how a focus on value can benefit all the businesses and actors in a producer-to-consumer chain. You will explore how chain efficiency and effectiveness can affect net value of products to end users and each participant and impact of the whole value chain. Through online learning activities, case studies, tutorials, and workshops, you will also learn the importance of customer relationships, the impact of branding and messaging, and where value might be created in digital transactions. This subject also incorporates learning through practice by exposing you to authentic learning experiences. Value Chain Management in Agribusiness

In this subject you will explore the importance of agribusiness management plans, links with business strategy and how agribusiness managers can integrate the outputs of planning into business management and operations. Planning is an essential activity for agribusiness managers in order to guide the allocation of valuable resources to priority areas. Concepts and techniques will be introduced to assist in the development, implementation and review of agribusiness management plans. This includes an introduction to examples of agribusiness management plans and case studies from industry.  Students will experiment with various analytical tools used to identify a business&#39;s strengths and weaknesses and integrate these results into management decision making to evaluate business opportunities and challenges.  This subject also incorporates learning through practice by exposing you to authentic learning experiences. Approximately two thirds of Australia&#39;s agricultural commodities are exported each year, generating $50 billion. This subject provides an understanding of historical developments, current status and future opportunities and challenges of the dominant agricultural and horticultural industries in Tasmania and Australia. Key factors involved in establishing new industries and the importance of comparative and competitive advantages to the ongoing success of existing industries in a competitive global market are considered. The concepts of supply chains, value chains, value adding and quality assurance, and food and fibre processing are introduced. Practical and tutorial sessions will involve guest speakers, group discussions and digital recordings from previous site visits.
