What is the Dementia Care Program?The Dementia Care Program offers Australia&#39;s first degree in dementia care. It is available to domestic and international students, from carers to health professionals and anyone with an interest in studying dementia. This program will develop your specialised knowledge in this field so that you can make a difference to the lives of people living with dementia.This is a fully online program with no exams, face to face study, or workplace assessment component. Dedicated Student Advisers are on-hand throughout the program, providing support and guidance throughout your studies. Our program can be studied full-time or part-time, offering you a choice to graduate with a:<ul><li>Diploma (8 subjects, completed over a maximum of 3 years)</li><li>Associate Degree (16 subjects, completed over a maximum of 5 years)</li><li>Bachelor Degree (24 subjects, completed over a maximum of 7 years)</li></ul>Students may study part-time (1-2 subjects) or full-time (3-4 subjects) per semester. Students are advised to approximately 10 hours of study per week per subject of study. There are no formal examinations, all assessments occur throughout the semester.Assessments may include quizzes, assessed discussion boards, essays or reports, presentations.

This subject will provide an introduction to existing evidence-based research on the benefits of engagement with the arts, through the lifespan and strategies employing creativity to support better ageing and mitigate risk factors for dementia. The subject offers opportunities for students to undertake creative tasks, develop their own creativity and reflect on the cognitive benefits.

Explore how enjoying artistic activities contributes to peoples’ wellbeing and quality of life. Learn how to engage people in imaginative pieces that communicate their thoughts and emotions—and work on your own creative project too!

Participation in the creative arts has been shown to afford a wide range of benefits to mental health and wellbeing for young and old. This subject explores ways in which the creative arts and play can be used therapeutically to support and enhance mental wellbeing for children, adolescents and younger people. It explores particular challenges associated with life events, neurodiversity, or for those who are from minority or marginalised groups. A framework derived from principles of trauma-informed practice is used to inform critical evaluation of complex issues, and to consider appropriate and effective design of creative arts and play-based activities in a variety of scenarios. You will have opportunities to explore your own creativity and gain practical insight into different roles in the therapeutic arts, and to explore your own interests by conducting individual research that will deepen your understanding of the potential of creative arts and play for supporting aspects of the mental wellbeing of a specific cohort.

Creative Arts, Play and Mental Wellbeing

This introductory subject will explore the physical and cognitive changes that occur during the ageing process, and age-related pathological changes that can lead to diseases that cause dementia. This subject will introduce fundamental neuroscience concepts in the healthy adult, ageing and diseased nervous systems, with a focus on brain structure and function. Throughout this subject, students will learn how to find scholarly literature, and how to recognise and summarise scientific evidence to use in their academic communication.

Practical interventions employing arts-based activities, including music, theatre, dance and visual arts, are increasingly being employed nationally and internationally to improve mood and well-being, physical activity and cognitive processing for people with dementia. Arts-based programs have also been shown to have some capacity to enhance communication of emotions and relationships with carers. This subject will explore the evidence-based research on the benefits that can be conferred through the stimulation of sensory perception, reminiscence and subconscious movement using music, theatre, dance and visual arts. These will be dealt with in three separate modules. Students will develop knowledge of model interventions employing music, theatre, dance and visual arts, and each module will also provide an introduction to key elements of successful program design and the range of activities that can be employed.

Explore how music, dance, and theatre can improve the lives of people with dementia. You’ll review case studies and research for examples of creative activities. Think about your own arts program and how you can influence patients’ wellbeing.

This subject will involve students selecting a research topic related to ageing or dementia for a major assignment and related presentation. The subject area will be negotiated with the academic staff contributing to the subject, and will involve a literature review and analysis and synthesis of research in this area. Students will be required to present their project verbally, and to respond to questions and comments in the online environment.

Negotiated Project in Ageing and Dementia

Research is providing increasing evidence for the positive benefits of engagement with the arts for individual and community wellbeing at all stages of life and can provide a non-pharmaceutical adjunct to health interventions. This subject explores case studies of successful creative arts projects in community settings and discusses appropriate evaluation frameworks for health and wellbeing outcomes. Students will reflect on and evaluate critically a community arts project in their own region and will model the planning and conduct of community arts projects, the development of funding strategies, risk management and ethical conduct, developing creative place-based problem solving through writing a proposal for a project intended to promote health and wellbeing.

Arts in the Community

Dementia friendly societies are designed to support people to live well with dementia through a range of integrated social, environmental and physical strategies. This advanced level subject explores the challenges of building dementia friendly societies with, and for people living with dementia. The subject will enable students to critically explore contemporary issues and concepts related to dementia friendly societies, prior to applying learning in their own communities.

Dementia Friendly Societies

The provision of dementia care is shaped by overarching policy at the local, national and international level. This advanced level subject will explore the concept of policy, and the issues that influence the translation of evidence into policy and offer contemporary perspectives on how policy is implemented to drive equitable service provision for people with dementia. We will cover the role of policy in dementia care and ponder how to translate evidence into practice through knowledge translation and improvement science. Leadership skills are important to be able to change, influence and improve practice. To enable an appreciation of this vital aspect, content will be included on basic leadership theory.

Translating Evidence into Dementia Care

This subject will present a range of advanced topics related to international best practice in dementia care. This year, Advanced Topics in Dementia Care focuses on understanding and addressing the issues faced by people with dementia in seldom-heard groups. We will explore the experiences of people with dementia, from culturally and linguistically diverse groups, with diverse sexual orientation or gender identity, residing in correctional service facilities, living with comorbidities (physical and intellectual), who are homeless, those who are care leavers (includes child migrants and stolen generations) and veterans. We will explore assumptions and possible prejudices, raise awareness of health issues, and investigate how we can improve assessment, management and care to help overcome the challenges faced by many in these seldom-heard groups.

Advanced Topics in Dementia Care

This subject will identify and examine some of the principal qualitative methods used in dementia care and aged care research. Students will gain a critical awareness of the nature of qualitative evidence and its role in informing quality care for older people and people with dementia.
