About this subject
On completion of this subject students should be able to achieve the following learning outcomes:
1. Explain the role of domestic and international law in eradicating modern slavery.
2. Analyse the requirements of domestic and international modern slavery laws.
3. Evaluate the effectiveness of domestic and international modern slavery laws.
- Legal response to modern slavery
- Compliance obligations
This subject analyses the legal response to modern slavery with a focus on Australian law. The subject considers the compliance obligations in practical terms and in terms of their effectiveness. It also considers the international legal response to modern slavery: the Universal Declaration of Human Rights 1948, the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights 1976, the Rome Statute (17 July 1998), 1926 Slavery Convention and 1956 Supplementary Covenant on the Abolition of Slavery.
- Literature Review ( 2000 words) (25%)
- Essay (5,000 words) (50%)
- Oral Presentation of Essay Findings and Leading Discussion (25%)
- Oral- Presentation of essay topic. (note: this is so students can get early feedback from lecturer and from each other about their topics)
